Chinese-Nigerian footballer Su Yuliang could make history this weekend if he plays for Chinese Super League side Guangzhou City against Shandong Luneng after being added to the squad.

Earlier this week, Soccer Weekly reported that the 16-year-old had been registered and is expected to play in the club’s next game, their first since the league returned from its break, on Sunday.

The 16-year-old, who has been dubbed “Chinese Mbappe” by domestic media and netizens, was born in the city in January 2005 to a Nigerian father and Chinese mother. He speaks fluent Mandarin and Cantonese.

Su’s mixed heritage has generated plenty of interest from the domestic media, with Guangzhou home to a large African population.

Standing at 1.82m, Su reportedly ran a sub-12 second 100m in primary school. He has been training with the club academy since 2016.

Su, if he plays, will not be the first Afro-Chinese player to appear in the league.
