Olympic women’s volleyball champions China started their title defence in the worst possible way with a shock 3-0 whitewash by Turkey at the Tokyo 2020 Games on Sunday afternoon.

The Turks dominated and brought up 10 match points at the end of third set. They only needed one to win 25-21, 25-14, 25-14.

China, coached by the legendary Lang Ping, are considered favourites for gold again alongside the world No 1 US team.

Lang, who won gold as a player for China in 1984 and as a coach in Rio five years ago, expects the team to put it right.

“Let’s try to make up for it,” she said after the defeat, looking ahead to their next game against the Americans, for whom she was coach at the Beijing Games in 2008.
