It was set to be the clash of the titans in Tokyo 2020’s table tennis programme.

The world No 1 Chen Meng of China, irresistible in the early rounds here, held up her end of the bargain booking a final spot with a crushing 4-0 win against Singapore’s Yu Mengyu. But her expected opponent in the final, Japanese sensation Mima Ito, limped out on the wrong end of her own whitewash.

Ito, the world No 2, was dumped out in just 34 minutes by the woman ranked one place below her in the ITTF standings, Sun Yingsha of China.

Now, China is assured of both gold and silver at the end of tonight’s final (8pm, Hong Kong time), while Japan’s great paddling hope will battle it out for bronze with the 26th-seeded Singaporean.

Ito and her mixed doubles partner, Jun Mizutani, had claimed a shock gold against the Chinese duo of Xu Xin and Liu Shiwen on Monday, but Sun was determined to gain revenge for her teammates, and did so.
