The first Olympic gold medal for the 4x100m mixed medley relay was awarded on Saturday morning and it went to Great Britain’s swimmers, not China’s.
Britain, with Adam Peaty and James Guy alongside Kathleen Dawson and Anna Hopkin, stormed home to set a new world record of 3:37.58 at the Tokyo Aquatics Centre.

The Chinese, who also held the world record of 3:38.41 going into the final of this nascent event in Tokyo, were almost caught by Australia for whom Emma McKeon once again impressed in the final leg.
Both McKeon and Zhang had swum in the semi-finals of the women’s 50m freestyle just minutes beforehand, with the Australian setting another Olympic record of 24.02 seconds.
