With the colder months closing in, we quickly turn our sights from Tokyo 2020 to the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing. Due to Covid-19 restrictions China’s capital is expected to have a tense atmosphere much like Tokyo – but that won’t stop the top winter sports athletes from doing what they do best.
With the countdown to the February event under way, here are five contenders for this coming winter whose star power looks bright enough to melt some of Beijing’s artificial snow.

Kendall Coyne Schofield

The diminutive but incredibly explosive 29-year-old is one of the greatest female hockey players to lace up the skates for the United States, and will most likely get the chance to lead an American squad who are looking to win a second consecutive gold after beating the Canadians in South Korea in 2018.

Coyne Schofield’s knowledge and understanding of the game have landed her roles in colour commentary when it comes to the National Hockey League, working for the San Jose Sharks, and the Chicago Blackhawks in terms of player development.

The famed Canadian-US rivalry in women’s ice hockey has gifted us some amazing games over the years, and Beijing will likely come down to another battle between the two countries, with Coyne Schofield most likely on the ice when the game comes down to one final play.
