It was a day of double disappointment for China’s Zhang Shuai at the US Open warm-up Tennis In The Land tournament in Cleveland on Thursday.

Zhang lost in straight sets to Spain’s Sara Sorribes Tormo – 6-3, 6-1 – to see her singles run end at the quarter-finals of the inaugural WTA 250 tournament, and then went on to lose her doubles semi-final.

Defeat put paid to Zhang’s hopes of consecutive doubles titles following last week’s victory at the Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati with Australia’s Samantha Stosur.

The Chinese No 2 and Czech partner Lucie Hradecka won the opening game of the first set against Christina McHale of the US and India’s Sania Mirza before the US-Indian partnership fought back.

Third seeds Zhang and Hradecka rallied to win two more games but lost the first set 6-3 in 32 minutes.
