Actor and producer Adam Sandler claimed that plans to set his new NBA-based film Hustle in China were nixed by Netflix, in a recent interview.
On a recent episode of the Dan Patrick Show, the former Saturday Night Live comedian and keen basketball fan claimed that the streaming giant asked him to change the plot of the film.
In the film, Sandler plays a sports agent who, in an attempt to kick-start his career, travels overseas to find the next big thing in the NBA, with the plan originally for that to see Sandler’s character go to China.
“It was written originally that I find a player in China and somehow, Netflix is not in China,” he told podcast host Dan Patrick.

“So [Netflix] were like, ‘Would you guys please make it so we find somebody in Latin America or Europe?’ So the next thing you know, I’m in Majorca.”
“Wait, that’s how that happened?” Patrick asked Sandler.
Football on film falls badly short of the real game’s drama
“Yeah, it was originally, ‘Find a player in China,’” Sandler replied.
The finished version of the film sees Sandler’s character find a potential NBA recruit in Spain, with the player being played by real-life NBA player Juancho Hernangomez of the Memphis Grizzlies in his acting debut.
Sandler confirmed that a number of the Philadelphia 76ers players will also feature in the film.

“Yesterday, I did a scene with Doc Rivers, and a bunch of the Sixers were in there,” Sandler told Patrick on the podcast. “Tobias (Harris), Matisse (Thybulle), Seth Curry, and Tyrese Maxey. It’s all nice, guys.”
Star player Joel Embiid was meant to appear with Sandler in the Netflix hit Uncut Gems back in 2019 but he was replaced by former NBA star Kevin Garnett. The Philadelphia Inquirer reported that Embiid had to pull out as filming clashed with the NBA season.
There is no release date for Hustle, which also co-stars Robert Duvall and Queen Latifah.
