China’s Zhang Shuai saw her US Open involvement cut short in both the women’s singles and mixed doubles but she moved on to the round of 16 in the women’s doubles with partner Samantha Stosur.
It was a busy day of action for the only Chinese player at the final slam of the season, with all of China’s other eligible players instead choosing to play the upcoming National Games.
First she lost to teen sensation Emma Raducanu in straight sets in the singles before a thriller in the mixed doubles with partner John Peers of Australia.
They lost to top seeds Ivan Dodig of Croatia and Nicole Melichar of the US in an epic three-setter.

The first set went to a tiebreak which the Croatian-US duo won before Zhang and Peers bounced back with a 6-4 second set victory to take it to the shoot-out.
Dodig and Melichar proved too much with a hard fought 12-10 win to end their mixed doubles hopes in the first round.

There was better news for Zhang in the women’s doubles where she and Stosur beat Miyu Kato and Sabrina Santamaria in the second round, to keep up their seven-match winning streak.
The No 14 seeds won in straight sets – 6-2, 6-4 – to move on to the third round where they will face the third seeds, the Japanese pair of Shuko Aoyama and Ena Shibahara.
Zhang and Stosur, who won the Western & Southern Open last month in Cincinnati, beat Jil Teichmann and Jasmine Paolini in straight sets in the first round.

The Chinese-Australian duo won the 2019 Australian Open and reached the semi-finals of the 2018 US Open.
Elsewhere in the women’s singles, defending champion Naomi Osaka was knocked out by Canadian teenager Leylah Fernandez under the floodlights.
“From the very beginning I knew I was able to win,” Fernandez said after her win.

“I wasn’t focusing on Naomi, I was just focusing on what I needed to do. The crowd made a huge difference – they helped me get the win.”
Osaka, the No 3 seed on her return to grand slam tennis, lost her cool several times and tossed her racquet as her frustration got the better of her.
Japan star Osaka, who pulled out of the French Open in June before sitting out Wimbledon over concerns for her mental health, has said that she may take a break from tennis.
