China’s “volleyball queen” Zhu Ting will sit out the rest of the National Games because of a persistent wrist injury, the coach of her provincial team said on Thursday.

“We should let her have a rest,” Jiao Shuai, the Henan head coach, told the media after the first women’s volleyball match of the Games.

The announcement means China’s celebrated outside hitter will not have played a single match in the National Games.

In the Thursday game between Henan and Shanghai, Zhu sat on the sidelines with a bandage around her right wrist and did not play for her home province. Henan lost to Shanghai 0-3 in a game that Jiao said Henan performed “normally”.

Zhu injured her wrist in 2017, when she was playing for VakifBank SK in the Turkish Super Cup, according to An Jiajie, a coach with the Chinese national team. Wrist injuries have resurfaced for Zhu in recent years.

The wrist injury has also limited Zhu’s game time at the Tokyo Olympics, where China’s women’s volleyball team badly underperformed and were eliminated at the pool stage, the worst Olympic performance in the team’s history.
