Asia’s fastest man Su Bingtian eased into the semi-finals of the 100 metres at the National Games of China on Monday.

The 32-year-old Su, the Asian 100m record holder in 9.83 seconds, took his foot off the gas in the last 10 metres of his qualifying heat and crossed the line in 10.23, making him the second quickest qualifier.

Su, who shocked the world when he won his semi-final heat at the Tokyo Games making him the fastest finalist in the field, is a two-time Asian Championships gold medallist and an Asian Games gold medal winner.

His appearance in the 100m final in Japan made the Guangdong man the first Chinese to qualify for a 100m Olympic final. He eventually finished sixth in a time of 9.98 seconds.

While he is the heavy favourite to claim gold at the National Games, Su will face a stern test from fellow sprinters Chen Guanfeng, Xie Zhenye and He Yuhong.
