China inflicted revenge on Thailand at the Uber Cup to move on to face holders Japan at the women’s badminton team event in Denmark, while the men will also face Japan in their Thomas Cup semi-final.
The Chinese team won 3-0 to erase memories of the 2018 semi-final defeat to Thailand and move on to face holders Japan in the final in Aarhus on Saturday.
Thailand edged the 2018 semi 3-2 but there was to be no repeat as China won with a whitewash.
China’s Chen Yufei, the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games women’s singles champion, was not tested as Ratchanok Intanon retired hurt at 5-2 in their first game.

The Thai shuttler blamed a persistent shoulder injury that she had not yet overcome, saying she did not want to make it worse by continuing.
“I was surprised to see her,” Chen said, “I think it’s great that she’s here already and I hope that she can get back to her best. It’s a pity that we didn’t do a good game for the fans but I hope for the best for her.”

China’s Chen Qingchen and Jia Yifan then won their doubles rubber 2-0 (21-15, 21-10) against Rawinda Prajongjai and Puttita Supajirakul.
The doubles duo were unfazed by having to play much earlier than expected following Intanon’s retirement.
“We did better than yesterday,” Jia said, referring to the win over Taiwan. “We’re quite happy with our performance today.”

“All we could do is prepare for the worst, for the most difficult situation,” Chen said of facing a much changed Thai line-up in the semi.
“We’re very happy to win this point for our team,” Chen said.
He Bingjiao sealed the whitewash with a win over Pornpawee Chochuwong.

“I’m very happy, grateful and proud of my teammates,” He said, adding that the pressure was off at 2-0 up in the match.
China now move on to face Japan, who beat South Korea 3-1 in the other semi-final.
In the Thomas Cup, China’s men will also face Japan after beating Thailand, while Indonesia face Denmark in the other semi-final.

Holders China won 3-0 against Thailand with the win kicked off by Shi Yuqi’s 2-0 (21-14,21-17) singles win over Kantaphon Wangchaoren.
The doubles pairing of He Jiting and Zhou Haodong also won 2-0 (21-10, 21-18) over Supak Jomkoh and Kittinupong Kedren.
Li Shifeng then wrapped up the win with a 2-1 (21-13, 17-21, 21-7) victory over Kunlavut Vitidsarn.
China sweep Taiwan, face Thailand in Uber Cup semi repeat
Japan won 3-2 against South Korea with Heo Kwanghee beating Kento Momota in the opening rubber and the doubles pairing of Choi Sol-gyu and Seo Seung-jae making it 2-0 to the Koreans.
The Japanese fought back with a singles win from Kanta Tsunemaya and a doubles victory for Akira Koga and Yuta Watanabe.
Their semi-final place was sealed by Kenta Nishimoto, who beat Cho Geon-yeon in the decider.
