Melbourne United has been forced to offer an “unreserved apology” to Chinese stand-out Zhou Qi over comments made during Sunday’s heated clash with South East Melbourne Phoenix.

United courtside announcer Wayne Peterson caught the ire of the Phoenix after a throwaway comment about Zhou, who missed two free throws during the game which gave fans a free hamburger from league sponsor Hungry Jacks.

Peterson said Zhou “probably doesn’t understand” why the crowd cheered when he missed the shots, sparking an instant reaction from fellow courtside commentators.

“Melbourne United would like to acknowledge that there were some moments in the game yesterday against the Phoenix that didn’t live up to the club’s values or standards,” the club said in a statement on its website.

“Peterson acknowledges that the statement was inappropriate. The club has full confidence that Peterson had no intention of insulting Zhou. Peterson has reached out to offer his unreserved apology to Zhou Qi directly. He would also like to apologise to any other party who took offence.”
