Xie Feng, a former Beijing Guoan player and assistant coach, is returning to the Chinese Super League team to take on the head coach role.
The 55-year-old steps in to replace Slaven Bilic who earlier this week announced he was returning to Europe to be with his family amid the Covid-19 pandemic.
Beijing-born Xie brings deep experience to Beijing Guoan, on and off the field. As a player, Xie was selected for the national team in 1996 and represented the Chinese men’s football team in the 1997 World Cup Asian qualifiers. After retiring in 2001, he took on assistant coaching duties and later the head coach role for Shenzhen FC.
He rejoined Beijing Guoan in 2011 as part of the coaching staff and went on to serve as acting head coach until the end of the 2016 season.
“We welcome Xie Feng’s return to Beijing Guoan Football Club,” the club said in a statement posted on Weibo. “We hope that he can give full play to his experience and coaching skills to lead the team to achieve good results in the new season.”
