There is no hanging about in Beijing that's for sure, less than 24 hours after the stunning opening ceremony the business end of the Games begins.
We have an action-packed Saturday ahead of us, with medal rounds in skiathlon, speedskating and freestyle moguls skiing. China's mixed relay team are heavily tipped for success in the short-track speedskating, with Wu Dajing, China’s only gold medallist at the 2018 Winter Games, expected to lead Fan Kexin, Ren Ziwei and Zhang Yuting in a race which makes its Olympics debut today.
Away from the slopes and ice rink we'll be keeping up to date with Hong Kong trio Sidney Chu, Audrey King and Adrian Yung, as they continue to prepare for their events.

Opening ceremony recap

It is officially time to get the 2022 Winter Olympics under way. On this packed Saturday of competition, the first medals will go out to athletes across six disciplines.
Here’s our comprehensive guide on what to look out for today.


What’s coming up on day 1

The lead up to the Beijing Games has seen half-pipe athletes Eileen Gu, Ayumu Hirano and three-time Olympic champion Shaun White pull off some mind-boggling moves, including Gu's freeski double cork 1440.

Look out for half-pipe wizardry

The enigmatic two-time Olympic champion Yuzuru Hanyu has still not been seen. Fans are eagerly awaiting his arrival, but the Japanese star remains elusive. 
“It feels the entire world is looking for Hanyu,” was a trending post on Weibo, China’s equivalent of Twitter, with 30 million views over 24 hours.
“Where is Hanyu? I check it in the morning, in the afternoon and in the evening but still haven’t seen any news of him coming,” said one online user. 
There is a chance, however, we could see him later today in training. Expect a sufficient amount of hysteria follow.



Still no Hanyu

If you thought the skateboarding at the Tokyo Summer Games was good, you’re in for a real treat. There’s a huge amount of talent in Beijing 2022 snowboarding field.
The women’s slopestyle gets things started on Saturday morning. American Jamie Anderson is first up as she seeks out her third Olympic title, but keep an eye out for Japan’s Kokomo Murase and Aussie youngster Tess Coady.
We’re also loving the set up for Beijing 2022 snowboarders.

Kokomo Murase is looking so good. She posted a 74.95 in her first run to take an early lead, but hot on her heels is defending champ Jamie Anderson.
There are some unbelievable speeds going on in slopestyle this morning. Looking more like Big Air at the moment.

The final training run for the men’s Olympic downhill has been cancelled because of high winds.
Only three racers were able to make it down the 3.1km course on Saturday morning, before organisers stepped in for safety reasons.
Official forecasts show strong winds are pushing temperatures down to a chilly minus 19.5 degrees.
"Due to the present weather situation with high winds and no window in the forecast for decreasing winds, in the best interest of safety the jury together with the organisers have decided to cancel today's training run," a statement said.



Men’s Olympic downhill training cancelled

Hong Kong’s handsome flag bearer Sidney Chu - #香港棋手好帅 in Chinese - has become a hot trending topic on Weibo, China's version of Twitter.
The hashtag, used more than 2.34 million times and counting, is currently trending in second spot.
Many users say “he looks so handsome” and “he is so cute!” while others compliment his “dongbei” or ‘north-eastern’ Mandarin accent.
One user was a bit more critical saying, “Everyone looks good with a face mask”, which received more than 2,000 likes.
Nevertheless, Chu has won over the hearts of thousands of Chinese netizens.



Sidney Chu becomes an idol

Chinese fans believe Eileen Gu’s decision to represent China at the Beijing Winter Olympics is a major win for Team China, unfortunately her fellow US athletes do not feel the same. 
Former Winter X Games gold medallist Jen Hudak is one of several athletes to question Gu’s decision.
“It is not my place to judge, but Eileen is from California, not from China, and her decision seems opportunistic,” Hudak said.
“She became the athlete she is because she grew up in the United States, where she had access to premier training grounds and coaching that, as a female, she might not have had in China. 
“I think she would be a different skier if she grew up in China. This makes me sad. It would be nice to see the medals going to America.”
In June 2019, the US-born Gu famously announced she had decided to represent China at the Beijing Winter Olympics, describing it as a “once-in-a-lifetime opportunity” to help to promote the sport I love and inspire a younger generation. Gu is widely tipped for three gold medals.
Freeski pioneer Kristi Leskinen told ESPN Gu “almost certainly” would not be the athlete she is today without the training she received in the United States.
“But it’s equally difficult to imagine she’d have anywhere near the recognition, sponsorship deals or resources if she hadn’t chosen to represent China,” Leskinen said.
“So, while she often cites inspiration as her motivation, for some it’s hard not to see opportunism in it. Especially at a time when the WTA is suspending its events in China out of fear for a female athlete’s safety.”
For Gu, she is using her sport as a way to unite and inspire people around the world.
“It’s really easy to use sport as a form of unity and communication and friendship, because everybody is working toward a common goal,” she told Time magazine. 
“Because sport really is blind to race, gender, religion and nationality; it’s all just about pushing the human limit.”



Eileen Gu ‘chasing money in China’

The women's snowboard slopestyle qualification round is still underway, but we’re already seeing some early culling in the ranks.
Rong Ge from Team China will not advance to the final of the women's snowboard slopestyle after failing to make the top 12. Her best run score was 29.36.
New Zealander Zoi Sadowski-Synnott has come up trumps, edging out Kukomo Murase with a huge 86.75 to quality in No 1 position.
Murase finishes in second place with 81.45, and Finland's Enni Rukajarvi with 78.83 rounded out the top three.
USA’s Jamie Anderson slipped into fifth spot after a disappointing second run score of 53.26.



China’s Rong Ge bows out early

The Canadian women are surging ahead, leading Finland 4-1 some 30 minutes into the second period. 
Both Sarah Fillier and Sarah Nurse have broken Finland’s defense twice. They are dominating.

With the women’s snowboarding slopestyle done and dusted, we’ll turn our focus to everyone’s secret favourite Winter Olympic sport, curling.
China is set to face the USA in round 8 of the mixed doubles just after 2pm. Also, Czech Republic takes on Great Britain; Sweden meets Australia and Australia goes against Italy.

Hong Kong is far removed from the ski slopes and Olympic-sized ice rinks available in mainland China. But if you’re feeling inspired by the Beijing Games, there are a number of places around the city where you get can involved in winter sports from curling to ice skating.
While the outbreak of the Omicron variant has closed rinks and other indoor venues, here’s a list of six Olympic sports you can try out once social-distancing measures relax.

Where to skate, ski and curl in Hong Kong

The opening ceremony began with a dazzling display of fireworks, lights and song, but not everyone’s eyes were on the dancers and singers.
Chinese social media site, Weibo, took off as online users discussed some of the best looking uniforms and the best looking athletes. 
From Canada’s uniform madness to Taiwan’s “lost children”, we’ve compiled a list of the top 5 trends for your enjoyment. 



What’s trending on Weibo?

Gusts of bone-chilling wind and hard, man-made snow have made it tough for athletes at the Beijing Olympics, with even veteran snowboarders complaining about the conditions on Saturday.
The air temperature dropped to -20.4 degree Celsius at Genting Snow Park in Zhangjiakou right before the start of Saturday's slopestyle qualifiers for women, the bone-chilling wind leaving many volunteers with frozen eyelashes.
Athletes said the extreme cold and strong gusts of wind posed serious risks as they slid down a course designed to look like the Great Wall.
"It's cold! It's hard to keep your core temperature warm and then doing tricks feels a little bit more intimidating as you are just, like, stiff," two-time Olympic gold medalist Jamie Anderson, told Reuters.
American Anderson added that the wind would not necessarily blow the boarders off course but it "just kind of scares you", while the man-made snow was not the most enjoyable to ride.

We’re just over half way though round 8 between China and USA and things are getting tense. After being locked 3-3, Team USA have surged ahead to 6-3.
Still plenty of time for it all to change.
The comments online about the game are pretty funny. “Exciting”, “anxious”, “overly confused”, but “love the shouting” seems to be the general gist.
Oh, there’s plenty of chatter about China’s “cute” curling duo of Fan Suyuan and Ling Zhi, too. Love this sport!! 



US takes early lead over China

The International Olympic Committee says an Olympic security guard was “being overzealous” by manhandling a reporter broadcasting live on Dutch television before the opening ceremony.
Asked about the incident, Beijing Olympics spokeswoman Yan Jiarong told AP “we welcome all the international media” to report on the games and will protect their legal rights.
Sjoerd den Daas was speaking to the camera on Friday evening when a security official pushed him away.
He was able to complete his report later.
IOC spokesman Mark Adams said it was “unfortunate” and Olympic officials have contacted broadcaster NOS. NOS is the Netherlands’ state broadcaster and an official rights holder of the Olympic Games.

Guard was ‘overzealous’ with Dutch reporter

That was fun, and for a moment, a close game. But Team USA took a clear lead in the second half to win 7-5.
In a nice post-match exchange between the two teams, the Chinese curling team gave the Americans a gift set of four badges with the mascot for the 2022 Winter Olympics Bing Dwen Dwen.

The first medal event of Beijing 2022 has started.
Dinigeer Yilamujiang one of two athletes who lit the cauldron during last night’s ceremony is among the starters for the cross-country women's 15km skiathlon.
Athletes have to ski 7.5km in the classical style and 7.5km freestyle.



First medal event is under way

Hong Kong’s record-breaking Winter Olympic trio are getting a final feel for their slopes and rinks ahead of their Beijing events beginning next week.
After Covid-19 test dramas and dazzling opening ceremony duties, Alpine skiers Audrey King, Adrian Yung Hau-tsuen and short-track speed skater Sidney Chu can fully focus on what they came here to do: compete with the world’s best.

Hong Kong skiers check out the slopes

Norway's Therese Johaug has claimed the first gold medal of the Beijing Games with an emotional victory in the women's 15km cross-country skiing.
ROC’s Natalia Nepryaeva and Teresa Stadlober were neck-and-neck coming into the finish almost 30 seconds behind Johaug, but it was Nepryaeva who took second just 0.3 seconds ahead of the Austrian.
They are exhausted and emotional. Will this be the start of Norwegian dominance in the cross-country discipline?



We have our first gold medal

Team USA's three-time Olympic gold medallist said the Beijing Winter Olympics will be the final event of his impressive career.
"It will be my last competition, which is pretty special," the 35-year-old told media.
White said he has nothing left to prove, as he prepares to compete at his fifth and final Olympics for Team USA.

A cross-country skier born in Xinjiang, who was one of the two final torchbearers at the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics opening ceremony on Friday, was not picked because of where she comes from, the International Olympic Committee said on Saturday.
Dinigeer Yilamujiang, from Altay in China's western Xinjiang region, placed the lit torch onto a giant snowflake along with Zhao Jiawen, a 21-year-old biathlete, before it was lifted high above the spectators at Beijing's Bird's Nest stadium.
The selection of Dinigeer as one of the final two torchbearers came as many western nations diplomatically boycotted the Winter Games over China's treatment of Uyghurs and members of other Muslim minority groups in Xinjiang.
"Obviously the opening ceremony is something that the organising committee put together and there's creative input," IOC spokesman Mark Adams, told Reuters.
"We are involved to a certain extent."
"This is an athlete who is competing here, she is competing this morning. She has every right, wherever she comes from, whatever her background, to compete... and to take part in any ceremony."



Beijing torchbearer’s ethnicity not a factor, IOC says

China’s Mei Han has placed an early seventh in the women’s 3000m speed skating. It’s still early, but her time of 4:07.74 edged out her Belarusian opponent Maryna Zuyeva. 
World record holder Martina Sablikova has so far recorded the fastest time at 4:00.34. Sablikova is highly touted for a gold medal.

Three-time Olympic gold medallist Martina Sablikova has just moved into gold-medal position in the women's 3000m after crossing the line in a time of 4:00.34, pushing Japan's Takagi Miho into second.
Her time smashed the Olympic record that has been in place since Salt Lake City some 20 years ago.

Records have been broken in a rapid fire finale in the women’s 3000m speed skating.
Irene Schouten of the Netherlands won gold and set a new Olympic record time of 3:56.93.
Second place goes to Italy's Francesca Lollobrigida, while Canadian Isabelle Weidemann took bronze.

Irene Schouten takes gold in women’s 3000m

Norway have won their second gold medal of the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympic Games after their triumph in the biathlon mixed relay 4x6km event at the Zhangjiakou National Biathlon Centre.
Marte Roeiseland, Tiril Eckhoff, Tarjei Boe and Thingnes Boe clocked one hour, six minutes, 45.6 seconds to edge France’s Anais Chevalier-Bouchet, Julia Simon, Emilien Jacquelin, Quentin Fillon Maillet by 0.9 of a second.
The Russian Olympic Committee team of Uliana Nigmatullina, Kristina Reztsova, Alexander Loginov and Eduard Latypov took bronze 1.5 seconds behind the winners. The Chinese four finished in 15th place, 4:42.5 behind the Norwegians.
Norway lead the medal standings with two golds with the Netherlands on one gold medal.



Second gold for Norway after biathlon mixed relay win

“Say you ran out of money for the Olympic flame without saying you ran out of money for the Olympic flame.” This was one of many sarcastic comments on social media mocking the 2022 Beijing Games’ Olympic torch, a smaller-than-expected flame than the usual raging cauldron fire we are used to from past Summer and Winter Games.
But famed Chinese director Zhang Yimou, the man behind the 2008 Summer Games epic opening ceremony and Friday’s gala, said it’s all about being environmentally friendly and reducing carbon emissions. Read Jack Lau’s piece here.

China’s Ren Ziwei gave home fans at the Capital Indoor Stadium something to cheer about after winning his short track speedskating 1,000m heat in 1:23.772, edging France’s Quentin Fercoq, Jens Van’t Wout, of the Netherlands, and Great Britain’s Farrell Treacy.
In the next heat, more joy for China after 2018 Pyeongchang gold medallist Wu Dajing took his heat in 1:23.927 to qualify for the quarter-finals.
Li Wenlong finished third in his heat, in which South Korea’s favourite Hwang Daeheon set an Olympic record of 1:23.042.


Wu Dajing and Ren Ziwei shine in men’s short track

China’s 2018 Pyeongchang gold medallist Wu Dajing led his teammates into the semi-finals of the short track speedskating mixed relay competition as they maintained their quest to win the mainland’s first gold medal of the 2022 Winter Olympics.
They defeated Italy, who also advanced, South Korea and Poland in their quarter-final heat. The Chinese four now compete in the semi-finals with the final scheduled for 9.26pm Hong Kong time.

Three years after suffering an injury that almost destroyed her confidence, Ursa Bogataj made history for Slovenia on Friday after she became her country’s first-ever ski jumping gold medallist at the Winter Olympics.
The 26-year-old came from behind to win the women's individual ski jump in Zhangjiakou, overcoming Germany's Katharina Althaus to finish on 239.0 points.
Althaus took silver on 236.8 points, followed by Slovenia's Nika Kriznar on 232.0. Japan's Sara Takanashi, who has a record 61 World Cup victories but has never won the Olympic title, finished fourth.
World Cup overall leader Marita Kramer of Austria was ruled out of the competition after testing positive for Covid-19. Defending Olympic champion Maren Lundby of Norway did not compete in Beijing after deciding to prioritise her mental and physical health.
A knee injury cost Bogataj the entire 2019/20 season but, even though she never thought she could come back, she has returned in the best possible way with gold at the Olympics.

Ursa Bogataj wins Slovenia’s first-ever ski jumping gold

China reached the final of the Beijing Olympics short track speedskating mixed relay event after judges promoted them from third place to second in their semi-final.
The four of Qu Chunyu, Fan Kexin, Wu Dajing and Ren Ziwei finished third in their semi-final behind Hungary and the United States, but the Chinese team protested after the race and the judges deemed the US and Russia had infringed the rules, promoting China to second and allowing them to progress to the final where they will go for gold.
In the final, they will be up against Hungary, Canada and Italy. 
As China waited for the video review, users of Weibo are anxiously hoping that their team would end up in second place. After the review was ruled in China’s favour, Weibo users were overjoyed. “Ah! My blood is boiling from excitement! Good judge!” one said.
 
That looked like some hometown decision in the speed skating here at Winter Olympics. US team (and Russians) DQed and, as a happy coincidence, China through to the mixed relay final in about 15 mins.

China hang on to gold hopes after semi-final reversal

China claimed their first gold medal of their home Winter Olympics as the four-strong team of Qu Chunyu, Fan Kexin, Wu Dajing and Ren Ziwei completed a dominant victory in the final of the short track speedskating mixed relay final.
After nearly losing out in the semis, where they finished third but were promoted to second after USA and Russia were penalised for infringements, China’s 2018 Pyeongchang gold medallist Wu Dajing took control in the third leg and the Chinese never looked back as Italy took the silver and Hungary bronze, despite the Hungarians and Canadians crashing out with less than half the race to go.
China were favourites for the gold from the start and Wu was a dominant figure in their victory on Friday.
“We won! We won! China No 1!” Weibo users are posting, even before the results were announced.
“First gold! First gold! China forever a god!” another wrote, referring to a popular meme in China, similar to referring one as “GOAT”, or “greatest of all time”.
Some on Weibo are attributing the success to China being the host, saying maybe the US and Russia would not have been disqualified had the race been held elsewhere.
The Chinese team received their soft toys on the podium but the official medal ceremony will be held at a special venue later.

Chinese fans were just as enamoured by the commentary provided by former speed skater Wang Meng as they were about the mainland’s first gold of the Beijing Games.
The animated 2010 Olympic gold medallist said she always had confidence in Team China. ”They won. My eyes are the ruler. No need to watch the playback,” she gushed after the victory.
Online users loved her stye of commentary, with many calling her passionate and saying they were inspired by her enthusiasm.

Ren Ziwei has more to say though, and calls the past four years “very hard, really hard”.
“I’ve never thought of experiencing four years that was this full of hardship. I really thank my coach and people around me. I have thought about what to say countless times, but all I can say is that I’m happy. Why is it only me who’s happy?”


Wu overcome by emotion

Well, what a way to start the Winter Olympics, it doesn’t get much better than that.
A stunning opening ceremony, golden performances, world records, excitement and controversy, the past 24 ours or so has had it all really.
And there’s plenty more in store tomorrow too, with medal races in the men’s luge, China taking on Great Britain in the mixed doubles of the curling, and Zhu Yi competing in the women’s short programme.
