The morning after the excitement of the night before, and China's speed skaters will still be basking in the glory of their golden performance in the mixed team relay.
It's day two in Beijing, and already there have been some dramatic moments. The host nation's curlers were denied a spot in the semi-finals of the mixed doubles after losing to Great Britain. Elsewhere, 19-year-old Zhu Yi was unable to dazzle on her Olympic debut, taking a fall in the women's figure skating short programme. 
In the women's snowboarding slopestyle, Zoi Sadowski-Synnott won New Zealand’s first gold medal in Winter Olympics history after landing a double-cork 1080 on the second jump.
There are medals up for grabs in the men's luge, and several skiing events, while the US and Switzerland clash in the women's ice hockey. Follow us for live coverage of today's action at the Winter Olympics.

China stun Japan in women's ice hockey at Winter Olympics, taking a 2-1 win after a dramatic penalty shootout

China’s Zhu Yi kicks off the women’s single skating short programme in the team event, but it’s not a great start for Zhu. She leaves the ice looking distraught after a disappointing performance, the 19-year-old Yi fell on one of her jumps, producing a score of only 47.03.
The top five teams at the end of today’s qualification phase will go to the final.



Disappointing start for Zhu

An incredible start to the Winter Olympics for hosts China after speedskating mixed team stormed home to take gold in dramatic race, capping a big day on the snow for China and Norway, who ended the day with two gold medals.
After nearly losing out in the semis, where they finished third but were promoted to second after USA and Russia were penalised for infringements, China’s 2018 Pyeongchang gold medallist Wu Dajing took control in the third leg and the Chinese never looked back as Italy took the silver and Hungary bronze, despite the Hungarians and Canadians crashing out with less than half the race to go.

Recap of a dramatic day 1

The first round of the snowboard slopestyle final is over and we know the identity of our current leader.
As expected, it's Zoi Sadowski-Synnott of New Zealand topping the scores at the end of the first run. She did appear to play it safe in tricky windy conditions, after the other favourites all fell.
Each athlete will get three runs down the course which features three jumps and three jibs. It's up to the competitors to choose their line and perform their tricks, which are then judged. Best score from the three runs counts.



No surprise in slopestyle yet.

A big day of competition awaits. A total of seven medal events will be decided on the second full day of competition.
Curling mixed doubles is back early and China and currently locked in a tight battle with Great Britain, while women’s ice hockey world No 1 USA and world No 5 Switzerland clash later this evening.
Snowboarding big guns return for round 2 of women's slopestyle. Keep an eye out for Jamie Anderson as she hunts for her third Olympic gold.


What we’re following today

The start of the men's downhill has been rescheduled, and will begin at 12pm.
The men's blue-riband event of the alpine skiing programme will see a new champion crowned after Aksel Lund Svindal, who won gold in 2018, retired.
As usual Norway will be expected to be among the medals, and the country’s charge will be led by Aleksander Aamodt Kilde.

China and Great Britain are locked in a tight match in this morning's mixed curling round robin. This really is chess on ice.
After taking an early 3-1 lead, China have now slipped behind as GB shot ahead to 5-4.
With two ends to play, a win is still up for grabs. 
The top four teams from today will qualify for the semi-finals.

Julia Marino has stormed to the front of the pack in women’s slopestyle, posting a huge 87.68 to put her into first place ahead of New Zealand's Zoi Sadowski-Synnott.
Gold medal contender Jamie Anderson completes her run without falling, but it was an extremely safe descent. Anderson is bidding to become the first snowboarder to win three consecutive gold medals in the same event.



Julia Marino takes slopestyle lead

Who knew curling could be such a nail biter.
Great Britain has defeated China in a gripping match 6-5. China started the in top form, but world champions Great Britain proved too good in the end. 
China will be up against Italy in their final round robin match at 2pm, but the event will be largely meaningless - Italy has already qualified for the semi-finals and China are now placed 9th on the ladder.


Medal hopes dashed for China’s mixed doubles curling team

Wow wow. Kiwi sensation Zoi Sadowski-Synnott has secured gold in the women’s snowboarding slopestyle after posting a massive 92.88 points. That is New Zealand’s first-ever Winter Olympics gold medal.
The 20-year-old launched into a massive jump with her final trick, before being mobbed at the finish by Marino and bronze-medallist Tess Coady of Australia.
It won't be a third gold medal – or any medal – for Jamie Anderson, after she sits down on a landing and opts not to go full gas for the remainder of her run.

New Zealand win historic first Winter Olympic gold

The Beijing Olympics men's downhill on Sunday, one of the Games' signature events, has been delayed by at least two hours because of strong winds, organisers say.
Racing in Yanqing outside Beijing had been expected to start at 11am, but will now begin at 1pm at the earliest because of the "wind gust".
Wind also caused the cancellation of Saturday's third and final training run, albeit after three racers had come down the "Rock" course, notably Aleksander Aamodt Kilde of Norway.


Winds delay downhill

Olympic favourite Kamila Valieva has nearly eclipsed her own world record in the short programme of the team figure skating event at the Beijing.
The 15-year-old Valieva’s score of 90.18 points to In Memoriam by the Russian pianist and composer Kirill Richter at the Beijing Games was just off the record of 90.45 points set just weeks ago at the European championships.
Her performance moved the Russians into first place with 36 points, two ahead of Day 1 leader Team USA and seven ahead of Japan, heading into the men’s free skate later today.
Karen Chen took the ice for the Americans but made a couple of mistakes, including a fall on her triple loop near the end of the program. That left her in fifth place in the short program and cost her team valuable points.
Wakaba Higuchi was second, pushing her Japanese team into podium contention. Reigning gold medalist Canada survived the cutoff thanks to a strong performance from Madeline Schizas, while China claimed the last spot in the free skates by winning a tiebreaker with Georgia.

Zhu Yi has opened up about her tough start to the Beijing Games. Zhu kicked off the women’s single skating short programme, but it did not go well.
Skating to The Rolling Stones' "Paint It Black", Zhu tumbled on her first combination triple flip-triple toeloop jump, crashing into the wall, and bungled her triple loop later, scoring 47.03.
Top-placed Kamila Valieva, for ROC scored 90.18. Only the top five teams at the end of today’s qualification phase will go to the final.
"I'm upset and a little embarrassed," said the 19-year-old, who was born and raised in the United States.
"I guess I felt a lot of pressure because I know everybody in China was pretty surprised with the selection for ladies' singles and I just really wanted to show them what I was able to do but unfortunately I didn’t," she said wiping away tears.
Local netizens spared no mercy in a critique of her performance.
"Anyone would question how she was chosen to the team. Is it because she has a scientist father?," said one user on Weibo, China's version of Twitter.

Australia’s Olympic Team have announced curlers Tahli Gill and Dean Hewitt will return to Australia after Tahli returned a series of positive Covid-19 tests late yesterday.
It’s a huge blow for the country's first Olympic curlers and a reminder that Covid-19 remains a very prominent part of the games.

Australian curlers to leave Beijing after positive Covid tests

China’s Jin Boyang is preparing for the team event, men’s single skating. Will he be able to pull off his quadruple axel and secure a spot in the final?
Anxious users of Chinese social media platform Weibo are rooting for Jin and complementing his bright red costume. Readers might be confused why some on Weibo are calling Jin “Tiantian”. That’s actually his baby name. But to his fans, it’s now an endearing way of referring to the Chinese figure skater.


Men’s free skate under way

Jin Boyang got his Olympic campaign off to a strong start, with a huge cheer from his home crowd.
Jin posted a season best of 155.04. Despite a couple of small errors, he was happy with his routine.
His score puts China in an early second place, but ROC, who came out with a huge 181.65 and Japan’s Yuma Kagiyama made a statement with a personal best of 208.94.

Japan's Yuma Kagiyama produced an incredible personal best in the team event men's free skating at 208.94.
His routine included an almost flawless triple flip, triple loop and a triple axel, before landing his quad toe in combination with his euler and triple Salchow.
He becomes only the third man to score over 200 points in the free skate.
And that’s it for men’s free skating for the figure skating team event. Jin Boyang contributes seven team points to China, after ending his routine ranking fourth, behind Kagiyama, ROC’s Mark Kondratuik and the USA’s Vincent Zhou.
We will see Jin again on Tuesday for men’s short program.



Yuma Kagiyama dazzles, Japan leads free skating

Reigning Olympic women's luge champion Natalie Geisenberger crashed in training at the Winter Games on Sunday, on the same curve - the 13th on the track - where she wiped out in a training event in November.
The German, who was one of several riders who came unstuck, is bidding for a third straight gold in the women's singles. She lost control on the tricky 13th of the 16 curves and landed on the ice at the Yanqing National Sliding Centre before dusting herself off.
“The curve was shaded by sails and I became disorientated,” Geisenberger said. “At the bottom of curve 13, it's always a bit of a case of 'hold your breath' for me.”

If you were hoping to see the men’s downhill start now then you’re in for some disappointment. The winds haven’t dropped sufficiently, and organisers say it will be postponed “until another day”.

Zoi Sadowski-Synnott admits her historic gold medal for New Zealand will take some time to sink in.
"Honestly, I can't really believe it. I've been dreaming of this for a long time and yet for it to happen in reality, it's going to take a while to process,” she said.
"I was at the top, and I just knew that I had to put down the run that I've been planning to do [for] the Olympics for the last year, really. And I just, yeah, I just had to be completely on to it."



Zoi Sadowski-Synnott still shocked after taking gold

China reported 10 new Covid infections among Olympic athletes and officials arriving at the airport, and in the “closed loop” system, the Beijing Organising Committee for the Olympics said on Sunday.
The new daily infections dropped to almost a quarter of the level a day earlier, when a pickup in cases was reported as more Olympic-related personnel arrived for the Games. 
Han Zirong, vice-president and secretary-general of the committee, says the drop-off in arrivals helped Beijing contain the rise of new cases.


New Covid cases inside “closed loop”

The Australian Olympic Committee says Tahli Gill and Dean Hewitt, who tested positive for Covid-19, have been given permission from Chinese public health authorities to continue competing in mixed doubles curling under close contact rules.
Their match against Switzerland at 2pm will be on as scheduled.
“We are thrilled for Tahli and Dean and I am delighted that our headquarters team continued pressing her case, after earlier advice that the pair could no longer compete,” Geoff Lipshut, head of the Australian delegation, said.

Well, that was huge.
Su Yiming, the 17-year-old snowboarding rookie, propels himself into No 1 position with a score of 86.8 in the men’s snowboarding slopestyle.
Su, the sole China competitor in the men’s comp, takes a huge lead over USA’s Sean Fitzsimons and Redmond Gerard - placed second and third respectively.
Su, the world No 3 in slopestyle, was the first Chinese snowboarder to ever land on the world cup podium in either big air or slopestyle.

Legendary short-track speed skater Wang Meng has predicted a big week for Hong Kong’s athletes at the Beijing Winter Olympics.
The 36-year-old is considered China’s most decorated Winter Olympian having won four golds, one silver and one bronze. She is also one of the sport’s most decorated athletes of all time with 18 world championship golds and several World Cups.

Meng predicts big things for Hong Kong

The first-and-only Chinese snowboarder to win a World Cup big air title, and the first rider on the planet to land 1800s two ways in FIS competition, Su Yiming is a serious Beijing 2022 Games big air and slopestyle medal hope.
Even more impressive is the 17-year-old “snowboarding genius” achieved both feats in the past two months, appearing to be peaking at the perfect time for his Olympics debut.
His opening run was a statement. This kid means business.

Su Yiming trains ‘320 days a year’

Olympic organisers say they’re addressing complaints about isolation conditions for athletes who test positive for the coronavirus and working to ensure they have clean rooms, better food and access to training equipment.
“These are exactly the kind of things we have to address. It’s a duty. It’s a responsibility. We have to make sure that the expectations are met,” Christophe Dubi, the International Olympic Committee’s executive director for the games, said.
The comments came after multiple complaints about the isolation conditions.
The German team called the situation for its athletes “unreasonable” and said rooms should be bigger and cleaner.
Russian biathlon competitor Valeria Vasnetsova said she couldn’t stomach most of the food she was given, and mostly survived on a few pieces of pasta.
Soon after the post, a team spokesperson posted a picture showing what he said was improved food, including salmon, cucumbers, sausages and yogurt. A total of 363 people inside the Olympic bubble have tested positive for Covid-19.

IOC to address “unreasonable” quarantine conditions

Eileen Gu is getting ready for her first event, big air freestyle skiing, tomorrow at 9.30am.
"Training went well," Gu posted on Instagram.

Eileen Gu preps for Olympic start

Hong Kong only fielded four delegates at the Beijing 2022 Games opening ceremony despite sending a record number of athletes in its Winter Olympics history – much to flag-bearer Sidney Chu’s disappointment.
The 22-year-old short-track speed skater was winged by mini Hong Kong flag-waving chef de mission Karl Kwok Chi-leung, Skiing Association of Hong Kong chairman Edmond Yue Kwok-yin and Hong Kong Skating Union chairman Yip Siu-yin at a rapturous Beijing National Stadium on Friday.
Chef de mission Kwok, who comes full circle having assumed the deputy chef de mission role at the Beijing Summer Olympics in 2008, explained the lack of presence at the ceremony.


Chu rues opening ceremony ‘misses’

China’s snowboarding phenom Su Yiming just finished his second run on the slopes, after previously qualifying for the men's snowboard slopestyle finals. With a dizzying 86.8 on his first run, he posted 41.93 on his second. Still, it was enough to keep him in the No 1 position heading into Monday’s final.
Su leads ahead of Canadian Mark McMorris and Sean Fitzsimons of the US, who locked in second and third respectively.

As Olympic chiefs confirmed they would meet Peng Shuai, activist group Global Athlete used the tennis player as an example to remind competitors at the Winter Games to refrain from talking about human rights while in China.
The well-being of Peng, a three-time Olympian, became a matter of concern in November when, according to the Women’s Tennis Association, she appeared to allege on social media that a former Chinese vice-premier, Zhang Gaoli, had sexually assaulted her in the past.

IOC confirms Peng meeting

The men’s downhill, one of the signature events of the Games, was postponed Sunday because of high winds.
The downhill will now be held at midday on Monday with the two legs of the women's giant slalom to be held either side of that, at 9:30am and 2:30pm.
The event of alpine skiing had initially been scheduled to start at 11:00am today, but was delayed three times in the hope that the gusty wind would die down.

It’s not looking too good for Team China, after Italy takes a strong 6-4 lead in mixed doubles.
At this point, seems unlikely China will be heading through to the semi-finals.


Tense time for China’s curling mixed doubles

China crash out to Italy 8-4 in their mixed doubles round robin session, which means they will not advance to the semi-finals.
The Italians have already qualified for the semi-finals by rank, with a total of 7 wins and zero losses.
Meanwhile, after a roller-coaster of a day with Covid-19 tests, Australia made it onto the ice today and they have their first win of the Olympic tournament. They've beaten Swiss team and Pyeongchang 2018 silver medallists Martin Rios and Jenny Perret.



Italy too good for China in curling mixed doubles

The internet can now relax. Japanese figure skater Yuzuru Hanyu has arrived in Beijing after days of fans speculating on his whereabouts.
The double gold medallist and defending champion has been absent from the Games host city until now.
A “Fanyu” has informed us that is his mother on the right, and Hanyu will not be in the Olympic Village, but a dedicated hotel within the bubble.

Russian cross-country skiers Alexander Bolshunov and Denis Spitsov finish first and second respectively at the men's 30km skiathlon, with Finnish skier Livo Niskanen finishing third.
Bolshunov took an early lead and never looked back. What a performance.

The next medal is up for grabs in the men's 5000m speed skating.
Ones to watch in this final? Ted-Jan Bloemen of Canada, Sven Kramer of the Netherlands, Sweden’s Nils van der Poel (SWE), and Bart Swings from Belgium.
Van der Poel holds the world record at 6:01.56; Kramer is the Olympic record holder.


Speedskating final under way

The puck has dropped in the women’s ice hockey between China and Japan. The home team, ranked 20th in the world, are likely to face tough competition from Japan who are ranked 6th.

Yes, I know it’s the Winter Olympics, but China are 90 minutes away from winning the AFC Women’s Asian Cup, and a record-extending ninth title.
Captain Wang Shanshan has been talking ahead of tonight’s final against South Korea, which kicks off at 7pm (HKT).

The women’s ice hockey match between China and Japan has seen an early casualty as China’s Kang Mulan is wheeled off with injury. 
It’s a physical and aggressive game. China’s Li Beika received a 2 minute penalty for an illegal hit and Japan take immediate advantage and score.
No word yet on the state of Zhang.

Sven Kramer, the three-time defending champion in the men's 5000m speed skating event, will not be on the podium this year.
And, adding insult to injury, his teammate Patrick Roest has just taken his Olympic record off him. Roest clocks 6 minutes 9.31 seconds, taking just over four tenths off Kramer's mark from 2018.

As an acrimonious first period of the women's ice hockey ends, Japan leads with one goal over China.

Hong Kong's three-time women's world snooker champion Ng On-yee will be supporting the city's Winter Olympics athletes in the UK as she prepares for the world championships next week.
"I am aware that the HK team will be up next week, so definitely be supporting from UK and watch if timing allows," Ng told the Post.
Ng managed to obtain permission to leave Hong Kong to compete in the UK and return to the women's tour and the mainstream circuit.
The Eden Masters champion will stay in Britain for two months before returning to Hong Kong.

Chinese teen sensation Su Yiming said he fulfilled a dream at the Beijing Olympics after a stunning opening run in the men’s snowboarding slopestyle event on Sunday, putting him top of the standings and favourite for gold.
The 17-year-old Olympic debutant recorded a spectacular 86.80 points on his first run, going past his childhood hero, Canada’s Mark McMorris, who recovered from a relatively weak opening effort to score 83.30 on his second run.

Su Yiming ‘fulfils a dream’

Furious discussion has erupted among Chinese netizens.
Commenters piled in over the referee's decision to hand China a penalty when two athletes from the opposing team bumped into each other.
"Is the referee blind?" an enraged netizen wrote on Weibo.
Others drilled down small the finer details of the match.
Netizens point out that "Defending the Yellow River", a battle hymn composed during the second Sino-Japanese war from 1931 to 1945, was being played as background music during intermission.
Many commenters laughed at the politically-charged context of the song, but some expressed patriotic pride at the song choice.
"Our advantage as hosts is palpable here, the context of the song is very fitting. DJ, drop the beat."


Defending the Yellow River

That was a match full of drama. After a furious start to the second period, Japan manage to hold on and take the game 1-0 against China.
The second stanza saw China slapped with a second penalty for an illegal hit and star player Ni Lin was benched for 2 minutes.
Japan currently sit top of Group B on six points, ahead of the Czech Republic on goal difference. The Czechs play their third game against Denmark on Monday.

The men's 5000m final sees world record holder Nils van der Poel of Sweden take gold with a new Olympic record 6:08.84.
Patrick Roest takes silver and Norway's Hallgeir Engebraaten bronze.

Vietnam booked their place at the Women's World Cup for the first time after beating Taiwan 2-1 in their playoff tie at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai on Sunday. 
In a physically draining encounter, Nguyen Thi Bich Thuy scored the winner after Su Hy-Ysuan had cancelled out Chuong Thi Kieu's first half opener as Vietnam confirmed their spot at Australia/New Zealand 2023.

Just one day after a Dutch journalist was dragged away by security officials during a live cross for Dutch national broadcaster NOS, security officers are at it again.
A Swedish broadcaster's interview with a Beijing citizen ended after police appeared on scene and cameras quickly cut away.
The IOC described Saturday’s incident as an “isolated event” and vowed not to interfere with foreign media outlets' reporting on the Games.

Broadcast interrupted, again

The drama continues in the women’s ice hockey where China have just defeated Japan 2-1 after a penalty shootout.
Under Olympic rules, a 3 on 3 overtime rule kicked in where China was able to secure a much-needed goal.
The team then had a goal disallowed in overtime after the refs ruled that there was goalie interference and they headed into a penalty shootout.
Japan still lead Group B in goal differences, but China are now placed third ahead of Sweden and Denmark.

The first stage of a three-run final of the women’s moguls is underway at Genting Snow Park and Australia’s Jakara Anthony has taken a strong lead with 81.91.
After initially topping the leaderboard, USA’s Kia Owens moved into seventh place, but still managed to qualify.

Kobayashi Ryoyu wins gold in the men’s normal hill ski jumping event.
After finishing seventh in this event in Pyeongchang, the 25-year-old produced a marvellous first jump in the first round of the final, scoring 145.4, which helped him overcome a poorer jump in the final round to claim his first Olympic medal.

Jakara Anthony has won Australia’s first gold at the Beijing Winter Games, storming through the women’s moguls competition with a huge leading score of 83.09.
The Aussie was a picture of consistency across the three runs winning every stage. 
Anthony, who finished fourth in this event at PyeongChang 2018, produced a stellar run to clinch the gold ahead of USA's Jaelin Kauf and ROC's Anastasiia Smirnova.

Some frightening speeds taking place in the men’s luge, we’re talking upwards of 130km.
It’s no wonder luge is the only Olympic sport timed to the thousandth of a second.
Austria's Nico Gleirscher currently leads the 20-strong field a fraction of a second faster than USA’s Tucker West. 
But at these speeds, it’s still anyone’s to take.

Ludwig has been in first place ever since the first run of the men's competition, and just crossed the line to win Olympic gold.

A huge turn around for the Aussies.
After an incredible day, which saw the Australian’s almost sent back home after a positive Covid-19 test, they rebound to beat the Canadians 10-8 in extra time.
Having been winless before today, and being cleared to play by the Medical Expert Panel, Dean Hewitt and Tahli Gill defy odds and defeat John Morris and Rachel Homan.
“It has literally been the craziest, craziest 24 hours. My bags are still packed, I only just had time to pull out my uniforms," Gill said.


Australia stun Canada to win curling

What a day. There’s been no shortage of memorable moments, from Su Yiming's stellar slopestyle run, to the incredibly physical women’s ice hockey scramble between China and Japan, and a historic gold for New Zealand.
There’s plenty more to get stuck into tomorrow as Su attempts to take gold in the men’s snowboarding slopestyle.
But let’s not kid ourselves, all eyes will be fixed on Eileen Gu as she gets her Beijing Games campaign under way. There’s also plenty to see in men’s freeski, figure skating, curling and alpine skiing.
