Day 7 of the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics saw some amazing achievements on the snow and the ice. The Netherlands’ Suzanne Schulting shattered her own 1,000m short-track speedskating world record in the event’s semi-finals, and went on to win gold. Hong Kong’s Sidney Chu then made his debut at the men’s 500m event, but was eliminated in his heat, despite a valiant effort. Ayumu Hirano of Japan made history by becoming the first Olympian to land a front-side triple cork 1440 in snowboarding, and finished the half-pipe final with a big score of 96 to take home the gold. With another exciting line-up ahead for Saturday, here are our top five events to watch out for on Day 8 of Beijing 2022. Women’s skeleton medals up for grabs Zhao Dan and Li Yuxi will lead China’s women’s debut in the skeleton . They will be up against some tough competition in the form of Australia’s Jaclyn Narracott and Germany’s Hannah Neise, who are leading after two runs. The event will kick off at 8.20pm. Figure skating ice dance China’s Wang Shiyue and Liu Xinyu will be hoping to redeem themselves at these Games after a disappointing result at Pyeongchang 2018. The pair have been ice dance partners for 16 years and have trained overseas in the last four years, refining every part of their technique. They delivered a strong performance at the ISU Figure Skating Grand Prix last year, which bumped up their world ranking to No 4. They’ll be up against some fierce competition from Madison Hubbell and Zachery Donohue of the US, who placed first in the team event. We will see if their hard work has paid off at 7pm. Men’s ice hockey: battle of the arch-rivals The Canadians will be going against the US in the preliminaries at 12.10pm. Neither team will feature National Hockey League players , but the match is expected to be close. The US is first in its group after its win against China, while Canada is second following its win over Germany. The US has a slight advantage because of the huge 8-0 scoreline in its win over China on Thursday. Historically speaking, Canada has won most of its Olympic matches against the US. But with star players missing from both teams, there’s everything to play for. Men’s speedskating The final of the 500m sprint – the shortest distance in speedskating – will be up at 4.53pm. Norway’s Håvard Holmefjord Lorentzen will attempt to defend his title from Pyeongchang, while South Korea’s Cha Min-kyu and China’s Gao Tingyu will try to improve on the silver and bronze they got in 2018. The pressure is also on for Canada’s Laurent Dubreuil, who scored the most points at the 2020-21 World Cup out of all of the 500m skaters who will line up on Saturday. The last time Canada won any medals in speedskating was at the 1998 Winter Games in Nagano, Japan. Ski Jumping The final round of the men’s large hill will take off at 8pm. Japan’s Ryoyu Kobayashi will be looking to soar into first place and attain back-to-back gold medals. Kobayashi won the normal hill event on Sunday, followed by Austria’s Manuel Fettner with silver and Poland’s Dawid Kubacki with bronze. The large hill ski jump sees athletes jump from a hill of 120 metres, as opposed to the normal hill, which is from 90 metres. This is one of the few events at the Winter Olympics that is still not open to female competitors .
