Asian Para Games 2023: table tennis gold for Hong Kong as city’s athletes add 3 more medals on final day

  • Women’s table tennis doubles gold for Ng Mui-wui and Wong Ting-ting along with bronze in the same event, while women’s team sabre fencers win bronze
  • City set to finish Games ranked ninth with 47 medals including eight golds

Hong Kong’s table tennis players and wheelchair fencers led the city to a successful final day of the Asian Para Games in Hangzhou by contributing a gold and two bronze medals on Saturday.

Women’s doubles pair Ng Mui-wui and Wong Ting-ting defeated Japan in the table tennis class WD22 final, bringing the city’s gold-medal count to eight.

In a nail-biter final, the Hong Kong duo traded control with Japanese pair Kanami Furukawa and Maki Ito to pull off a 3-2 (11-5, 10-12, 10-12, 13-11, 11-7) win.

The women’s triumph earned them a congratulatory statement from Secretary for Culture, Sports and Tourism Kevin Yeung Yun-hung.

“Ng and Wong stayed resilient in difficult times and turned the challenge into victory with a gold medal,” he said. “Their outstanding performance deserves our great applause.”

The city took two spots on the WD22 podium, as Wong Yue-ching and Wong Pui-kei clinched bronze after losing to compatriots Ng and Wong.

The city also clinched a podium finish in wheelchair fencing, a sport which Hong Kong has dominated at the Games.

After a loss to hosts China 45-23 in the women’s sabre team semi-finals, Hong Kong went on to face South Korea for the bronze and bested them 45-29 to add the fencing squad’s fifth medal.

“I also give my best wishes to the women’s team sabre, as well as the coach and support team who contributed a lot in their journey of success too,” Yeung added in his statement.

It followed success for Hong Kong’s badminton players on Friday, when Chu Man-kai won men’s singles SH6 gold by beating India’s Krishna Nagar.

Heading into the closing ceremony, the city had accumulated 47 medals, including eight golds, to finish ninth in the medals table by total medals.

Hong Kong’s athletes fell one medal short of their total tally from the 2018 Jakarta Games, when they won 11 golds.

China ended the Games with the most medals with 521 and most golds with 214.
