Zheng Qinwen may have had elbow surgery only days ago, but she has been named in China’s team for September’s Billie Jean King Cup finals in Shenzhen, raising the possibility of an early comeback.
Olympic champion Zheng said on Saturday that she would be out for weeks if not months following arthroscopic surgery on her right elbow, and on Monday her withdrawal from the US Open at the end of August was confirmed.
But on Tuesday, organisers of the Billie Jean King Cup – formerly known as the Federation Cup and contested annually between women’s national teams – announced that Zheng had been selected by her country for this year’s edition, to take place from September 16 to 21.
The organisers also said: “Nations can make up to four changes to their squads until one day before the event start date.”

Should world No 6 Zheng feature in Shenzhen, she will have recovered from surgery and regained match fitness within two months.
Also picked by China were German Open finalist Wang Xinyu, world No 36 Yuan Yue, Zhang Shuai, Jiang Xinyu and captain Liu Feng.
Other stars set to head to the southern Chinese city are Britain’s Katie Boulter and Emma Raducanu, Spain’s Paula Badosa, Japan’s four-time major champion Naomi Osaka and Americans Jessica Pegula, Madison Keys and Emma Navarro.
Defending champions Italy are set to be represented by world No 9 Jasmine Paolini, along with her fellow Olympic women’s doubles gold medallist Sara Errani.
“This is an incredible line-up of players and we are so excited to see them giving everything for their countries in Shenzhen,” tournament director Conchita Martinez said.
“This is a truly unique competition, and the strength of the team nominations proves how much the players value the chance to try and help their nations become world champions.
“Fans watching in the stadium and around the world are going to be treated to a very special week of team tennis in September, and we can’t wait for it to start.”
Zheng’s withdrawal from the US Open, which takes place from August 24 to September 7, ended her run of 15 consecutive appearances at grand slam tournaments, dating back to her debut at the Australian Open in 2022.
China’s No 1 has reached the quarter-finals of the US Open for the past two years, losing both times in straight sets to Aryna Sabalenka.
Elsewhere, Venus Williams enjoyed a winning return to tennis after more than a year away from the game as the 45-year-old American teamed up with compatriot Hailey Baptiste to win their round-of-16 women’s doubles tie at the Washington Open on Monday.
The seven-time grand slam singles champion had not played a competitive match in 16 months, with her last appearance on the WTA Tour coming at the Miami Open in March last year.
Williams and Baptiste beat Eugenie Bouchard and Clervie Ngounoue 6-3, 6-1 to reach the quarter-finals in Washington, and the former world No 1 said it felt “inspiring” to be back on court.
“It wasn’t easy for us but we brought it together quickly as a team. I love this game and still hitting it big,” Williams said.
Williams enjoyed playing with 23-year-old Baptiste so much she joked that she should have teamed up with her years ago instead of playing with her younger sister Serena, with whom she won 14 grand slam doubles titles.
“I could see that we were going to be a good team. We just should have started playing earlier, years ago, right?” she said. “I think Serena was just in the way.”
