Former table tennis world champion Chen Qi has revealed that the social media user who threatened “to murder” his entire family has been arrested by police in China.

The Olympic gold medallist received the chilling threat in a direct message earlier this week and had reported the incident to officials.

On Wednesday, he took to Weibo to report that the user, who went by the name Dragon in the Clouds, was “under administrative detention”.

“The matter has been resolved. Thank you for everyone’s concern!” the 41-year-old wrote.

There has been no indication as to what prompted the threat, although last August Chen reposted the state’s statement on cracking down on illegal and criminal activities in the sports “fan circles”.

He also added a caption that said, “Hate fans, beware.”
