Hong Kong women’s captain Kary Chan ‘incredibly excited’ to be leading charge for Asia Cup place

Kary Chan said she was ‘incredibly excited” to be leading Hong Kong’s women to Malaysia next weekend, as they begin the task of trying to qualify for the ACC Women’s Asia Cup later this year.
The 14-strong squad will fly out on Saturday, with their first game in the 10-team ACC Women’s T20 Championship against Bhutan on June 18.
Hong Kong have been placed in Group B for the tournament, and will also face Bahrain (June 19), Nepal (June 21) and Kuwait (June 22) over the course of five days.
The hosts are in Group A alongside UAE, Oman, Qatar and Singapore, with the top two in each group progressing to the semi-finals. The teams that reach the final will then face the likes of Bangladesh, India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka in September.
Chan said she believed that qualification was within the side’s reach, despite their recent struggles on a tour of the United Arab Emirates.
The Hong Kong skipper though, like several teammates, including Mariko Hill and Yasmin Daswani, showed she could hold her own against the game’s best during the FairBreak Invitational in Dubai.
“Though the goal is to make the final and qualify for the Asia Cup our focus will be on one ball at a time, if we do that I have every confidence we will be able to consistently put together strong performances,” Chan said.
