A big year for women’s cricket in Hong Kong will get started this weekend with back-to-back T20 All Star games, before the auction for the inaugural women’s IPL on Monday. While 10 of the city’s players registered for the WIPL, which will take place in Mumbai next month, only Hong Kong captain Kary Chan made the shortlist, with just eight players from associate nations included. Players from the UAE make up half that number, with others from the Netherlands, Thailand and the US. The five franchises were sold for £465m last month, with existing IPL teams Mumbai, Royal Challengers Bangalore and Delhi Capitals securing sides. Two new franchises were also bought and will be based in Ahmedabad and Lucknow. Each side can buy a minimum of 15 and a maximum of 18 players, including seven overseas cricketers for the tournament, with the auction on February 13 and the league itself running from March 4 to 26. A week after the WIPL finishes, the Fairbreak Invitational will start in Hong Kong, with many of the same players battling it out at Kowloon Cricket Club for the second edition of the new tournament. But before all that, Chan, Lemon Cheung and Shanzeen Shahzad will battle it out in the All Star series, with the Bauhinia Stars taking on the Jade Jets at Tin Kwong Road Recreation Ground on Sunday. Chan’s side dominated the first game in October on the back of their captain’s 122. Betty Chan returns as the Jets captain, while the squads have been shuffled to include several new faces. This Sunday also sees the final of the 2022-23 CHK Gencor Men’s Premier League One Day competition at Hong Kong Cricket Club. The home side have earned the right to host the final after going unbeaten throughout the group stages. They will face PACC, who won their remaining three group matches after losing to the hosts in the opening week. Fans in Hong Kong, and around the world, can watch live broadcasts of all three matches on the Cricket Hong Kong Facebook page, and on the Cricfit channel on YouTube, while fans in India can catch the action on the FanCode app. All Star squads: Bauhinia Stars : Kary Chan (Capt), Akasha Yousaf, Alison Siu, Amanda Cheung, Amy Lai, Dorothea Chan, Jennifer Alumbro, Joyleen Kaur Dhaliwal, Maheen Haider, Maryam Bibi, Mya Gardner, Pushti Lakhani, Sau Ha Chan, Shanzeen Shahzad.
