India A were always likely to prove to be too good for Hong Kong. But even so, the one-sided nature of the hammering handed out to the city’s women will have been hard to take.
Needing just 35 runs to win in both of the sides’ opening game of the Asian Cricket Council Women’s Emerging Teams Cup, India reached their target from just 32 balls, with Gongadi Trisha’s six over midwicket taking them to 38 for one and putting an exclamation point on her side’s emphatic victory.
Trisha should not have been there to hit the winning runs, having been dropped by Shanzeen Shahzad the previous over. As it was the India batter finished unbeaten on 19, with partner Uma Chetry not out on 16.
The only wicket Hong Kong did take was that of India captain Shweta Sehrawat, who was well caught by her opposite number Kary Chan in the covers off the bowling of Betty Chan for two.
“I think it’s the best way to learn, playing against the best,” Andy Cottam, the Hong Kong coach, said. “It’s tough, only six months ago they [India] were world champions at Under-19s.
