Liverpool set for summer return to China as Jurgen Klopp’s men lined-up to face Super League champions Shanghai SIPG
- Pre-season tournament could be held in Shanghai
- Triangular exhibition could also include Chilean side Colo Colo
Liverpool are among a group of English clubs which have adopted a commercial strategy of alternating their off-season tours to the United States and the Far East in recent seasons.
Liverpool’s primary club sponsor Standard Chartered has Asia headquarters in Hong Kong and is listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange.
Chilean outlet La Tercera reported that negotiations are well underway between the three clubs and MG Motors, Colo Colo’s main sponsor and one of Liverpool’s secondary sponsors who are now based in Shanghai, as the car manufacturer seeks to boost its profile in China.
It is thought the tournament would be hosted in Shanghai.
“Our fanbase is growing rapidly in this part of the world, and as we continue our partnership with MG China, we look forward to bringing our fans even closer to the club through fantastic activations,” said Liverpool’s chief commercial officer Billy Hogan.
Details of the tour are expected to be finalised in the coming weeks, although it is thought the exhibition tournament would take place in June during a break in the Chilean domestic season.
