Gary Lineker has hit out at Cristiano Ronaldo for posting a selfie on board his private jet, just hours after missing Argentine footballer Emiliano Sala’s plane disappeared.
“Not the day for this tweet. It really isn’t,” Match of the Day presenter Lineker wrote on Twitter in response to Juventus star Ronaldo’s ill-timed snapshot.
A 15-hour search for Sala’s aircraft was suspended on Tuesday evening with Guernsey police saying the chances of survival are “slim”.
The striker was on his way to Cardiff to begin training with the Premier League club after signing for £15 million (US$19.4 million) on Saturday.

The 28-year-old said goodbye to his former teammates at Nantes before flying back to Wales from France when the small private plane went missing over the English Channel on Monday night.
Former Tottenham, Barcelona and England striker Lineker had earlier expressed his worry about Sala’s disappearance. “Terribly worrying news,” he tweeted. Hopefully, somehow, they’ll be found and safe.”
Other Twitter users were also upset by the Portuguese superstar’s tweet.
“Not good timing,” was one user’s reply. Another response read: “Incredible levels of insensitivity and selfishness here.”
Former Harlequins, England and British & Irish Lions rugby star Ugo Monye also agreed with Lineker. “He’s [Ronaldo] a d***,” Monye wrote.

However, others took umbrage at Lineker’s tweet to Ronaldo.
“Actually Gary, you quoting this tweet is worse,” another said. “Clearly Ronaldo wasn’t directing this towards the Sala tragedy. Just poorly timed. But you quoting it calls the wrong type of attention to all of this, when we should just be sending thoughts and prayers.”
Lineker responded: “But you’ve just said it was bad timing. Which is the only point I made too.”
One user told Lineker to “stop s*** stirring” while another commented “there’s no issue there Gary ... ”, with someone else saying “unbelievable that you could even try and make something out of this”.

The search for Sala’s plane is set to resume on Wednesday morning, according to Guernsey police.
“During the course of the 15-hour search, which used multiple air and sea assets from the Channel Islands, UK and France, a number of floating objects have been seen in the water,” a statement said on Twitter. “We have been unable to confirm whether any of these are from the missing aircraft.
“We have found no signs of those on board. If they did land on the water, the chances of survival are at this stage, unfortunately, slim.
“Search and rescue operations have been suspended as the sun has now set. The current plan is for it to resume at sunrise tomorrow. There will be no further updates tonight.”
