Spanish police swooped on Barcelona’s Placa Reial after trouble involving Liverpool fans ahead of Wednesday night’s Champions League match.
Videos of ugly scenes in the famous tourist spot went viral on social media, including one fan pushing people into the square’s fountain.
The square was also seen covered in empty beer cans and plastic bags, with fans buying beer from street sellers as they enjoyed the sunshine.
One elderly Asian man was filmed being pushed off the edge of the fountain into the water, which is only a few inches deep. Another Liverpool fan then calls the man “Mr Miyagi”.

Other fans are filmed laughing at the man as he walks away drenched, checking if his mobile phone still works.
“Absolutely disgusting,” wrote one user on Twitter. “Treating anyone like this, let alone a gentleman who is older. Calling him Mr Miyagi. A disgrace to Liverpool fans … Made me upset. This is someone’s father or grandfather on holiday. Shame on you!”

“Utterly disgusting by some @LFC fans,” tweeted another user. “I hope they’re found and banned for life. An innocent tourist, imagine that. Nobody appears to help, all full of fear. Upsetting to see. Tarnishes the club, the game and the country.”
In another video, a Liverpool fan can be seen rugby tackling a man selling beers, who also appears to be Asian, into the fountain. Other fans are again seen cheering and laughing, with Merseyside police said to be probing the incidents, as reported by the Liverpool Echo.
Placa Reial was later entirely cordoned off, with riot vans descending on the square. Police marched Liverpool fans up La Rambla, the city’s main tourist street, with fans heard singing club chants.

According to Spanish daily sports newspaper Mundo Deportivo, police also arrested six Liverpool fans for abusing nearby hotel workers, with some of the employees requiring medical attention.
Some fans of the Merseyside club were quick to condemn their follow supporters’ actions on social media.
“Vile behaviour and not what the club is about at all,” tweeted Liverpool fan account The Anfield Edition. “Think @LFC should attempt to take this further, he doesn’t represent our fan base.”
There were also reports of other Liverpool fans throwing beer cans at police, who had tried to confiscate the items from supporters.

Liverpool CEO Peter Moore released a statement about the incident.
He called on fans in Barcelona “to visit here with grace and humility” but did not respond to the calls from other social media users to ban the fans involved in incidents in the square.
