MLS footballer Alejandro Bedoya used a pitchside microphone to call on the US Congress to end gun violence after a weekend which saw two mass shootings in Texas and Ohio.

The Philadelphia Union midfielder grabbed the mic after scoring a goal against DC United.

“Hey Congress, do something,” he said. “End gun violence now.”

Video of the 32-year-old’s plea has been widely shared on social media.

Captain Bedoya opened the scoring in a 5-1 win and his impassioned plea was heard live on the Fox Sports broadcast of the MLS game in DC.
