MLS footballer Alejandro Bedoya used a pitchside microphone to call on the US Congress to end gun violence after a weekend which saw two mass shootings in Texas and Ohio.
The Philadelphia Union midfielder grabbed the mic after scoring a goal against DC United.
“Hey Congress, do something,” he said. “End gun violence now.”
Video of the 32-year-old’s plea has been widely shared on social media.

So Ale Bedoya grabbed a field-level mic after scoring his goal and shouted, live on national television:

"HEY CONGRESS, DO SOMETHING. END GUN VIOLENCE NOW."

Captain Bedoya opened the scoring in a 5-1 win and his impassioned plea was heard live on the Fox Sports broadcast of the MLS game in DC.
Before the match he had posted on Twitter sharing his thoughts on gun violence.

“Seeing more thoughts and prayers b*******,” he wrote. “Words without actions are just worthless. America, it seems, is becoming a dystopian society. Do something!!! Enough!!!”
Bedoya also spoke after the game. “Before I’m an athlete, before I’m a soccer player, I’m a human being first,” he told reporters. “This stuff affects me.”
The Union skipper has been backed by his head coach Jim Curtin.

Speaking after the game Curtin said, “I’m on Alejandro’s team in support of his comments on gun control.”
