For anyone who has been to a cup final at a neutral venue, they are usually the most unforgettable football matches, for good or bad.
For English teams to get to Wembley, for example, is a day that lives long in the memory and such games take on lives of their own, becoming known by a nickname.
There’s the White Horse Final (the 1923 FA Cup final, the first held at Wembley) and The Matthews Final (the 1953 FA Cup final where “The Wizard of Dribble” finally won the cup at the third attempt).
More recently, the spirit of Matthews was channelled in the “Gerrard Final”, named after Liverpool skipper Steven Gerrard’s performance in the 2006 FA Cup final.
Most famous of all might be the “Miracle of Istanbul” for the 2005 Uefa Champions League final between Liverpool and AC Milan. The Italians were 3-0 up at half-time at Ataturk Stadium before Liverpool levelled the scores and then won on penalties.
