The Chinese Football Association has indefinitely suspended domestic football with immediate effect, it announced in a statement on Thursday.

Football at all levels has been called off in response to the outbreak of the deadly coronavirus that has spread across the world from Wuhan.

The CFA said it will liaise with the relevant authorities to determine if and when football will resume and any announcements will be made in due course.

The news means the Chinese Super League does not yet have a start date, with the Daily Mail reporting that some of the CSL’s foreign stars are looking to return to Europe before the transfer window closes on Friday night.

China’s top flight had been planned to start on February 22 but had been moved back to April, in line with the response from other sports to the virus. Before the Lunar New Year the CFA had already called off the Chinese Super Cup scheduled for February 5.
