Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Dele Alli has been charged by the English Football Association over a video where he mocked an Asian man over the coronavirus.
The England international has been charged with misconduct relating to an aggravated breach of rule E3, which relates to bringing the game into disrepute.
In a statement, the FA said, "It is alleged that his post breaches FA Rule E3(1) as it was insulting and/or improper and/or brought the game into disrepute.
"It is further alleged that the post constitutes an aggravated breach, which is defined in FA Rule E3(2), as it included a reference, whether express or implied, to race and/or colour and/or ethnic origin and/or nationality."


The 23-year-old posted a video on his Snapchat account from an airport lounge ahead of a trip to Dubai during the English Premier League winter break.
Alli, wearing a face mask, looks at the camera with the caption “Corona whattt, please listen with volume.” A number of what are believed to be Chinese accents are heard before the camera then focuses on a man of Asian appearance.


In addition to deleting the video after a number of complaints, Alli also apologised to Chinese fans on Weibo, posting a video and a written apology.
“I let myself down and the club. I don’t want you guys to have that impression of me because it wasn’t funny and I realise that straight away and took it down. It isn’t something that should be joked about,” he said in the video.
The FA wrote to Alli after the video to ask for his observations. His club have not commented on the matter, although manager Jose Mourinho did say he had an “easy conversation” with his player.


“Of course, I spoke with him about that,” Mourinho told a press conference ahead of Spurs playing Aston Villa. “But for me it was a quite easy conversation, because he was very sorry about that thing ... a mistake. It was never his intention to hurt, it was never his intention to offend.”
Mourinho also said that he did not think that it warranted an FA charge.
“I’m not the FA,” he said. “I’m his manager. His friend. I have to act as an educator and the best way to do it is immediately his reaction. Regret and apologise. So, game over.”
Will virus video see Dele Alli cancelled by China?
Rule E3(1) states that, “A Participant shall at all times act in the best interests of the game and shall not act in any manner which is improper or brings the game into disrepute or use any one, or a combination of, violent conduct, serious foul play, threatening, abusive, indecent or insulting words or behaviour”.
Alli has been charged with an aggravated breach of that rule, which comes under FA rule E3 (2). As per the FA, “A breach of Rule E3 (1) is an “Aggravated Breach” where it includes a reference, whether express or implied, to any one or more of the following :- ethnic origin, colour, race, nationality, religion or belief, gender, gender reassignment, sexual orientation or disability”
There is precedent this season. Manchester City’s Bernardo Silva admitted a breach of rule E3 over a social media post in September. The Portugal midfielder was banned for one game and fined £50,000 (US$64,620) He was also ordered to complete an education programme.
Spurs star Alli says sorry to Chinese fans for mocking virus
Alli will be subject to a standard two-game ban if he denies the charge and is later found guilty by the FA. He has until March 5 to answer the charge.
If Alli is banned then Spurs will be without him, Harry Kane and Son Heung-min as they aim to finish in the Premier League top four to automatically qualify for the Uefa Champions League.
Mourinho’s side play Wolves this weekend before travelling to Austria for the return leg of their Champions League tie with RB Leipzig.
