Opinion | Coronavirus puts Euro 2020 at risk, Uefa needs to brace itself
- Five of 12 Euro 2020 host countries have confirmed cases of coronavirus, with ‘party all over Europe’ to kick off on June 12 in Rome
- Uefa says plans remain same for Champions League and Europa League but football already affected

“Let’s try to be optimistic,” Uefa president Aleksander Ceferin told the annual congress on Tuesday, “not think about dark scenarios – there’s time for that later.”
In Uefa’s case there are 100 days to its flagship tournament, the European Championships. This year’s tournament is the first where hosting will be shared among 12 countries, five of which have confirmed coronavirus cases.
Uefa could not have picked a worse time to host its first month-long “party all over Europe”, as it describes a tournament that will stretch from Bilbao to Baku. Still, they are unlikely to not let it go without a fight.
Ceferin’s predecessor, Fifa president Gianni Infantino, said last week that this month’s international friendlies may be cancelled because of the spread of the coronavirus, but it was important not to panic.
Uefa is not. As it stands, its plans for Euro 2020, the Champions League and Europa League remain unchanged, while Uefa general secretary Theodore Theodoridis explained they are monitoring the outbreak.
