Manchester City or Real Madrid will take on Lyon or Juventus in the quarter-finals of the Uefa Champions League, with the draw conducted in Nyon, Switzerland on Friday. In other matches, Germany’s RB Leipzig take on Spain’s Atletico Madrid while Italy’s Atalanta face French giants Paris Saint-Germain. In addition, Napoli or Barcelona meet Chelsea or Bayern Munich. Four teams have already qualified for the last eight, with four last-16 matches remaining. “It’s good to be back,” said Uefa’s media chief Pedro Pinto, who gave thanks to the thousands of health workers and others whose efforts allowed Uefa to resume the 2019/20 Champions League competition, albeit in a shortened format. Club representatives could not be in Nyon for the draw because of Covid-19 restrictions but joined in remotely via video conference. Georgio Marchetti, Uefa’s deputy general secretary who assisted in the draw, also praised health workers as they look forward to completing the competition that has been halted since March. “Many thanks also to Portugal for offering to host the matches and we are confident we will continue and complete the tournament,” said Marchetti. Two-time Champions League winner Paulo Sousa, of Portugal, pulled out the balls from the three pots – the quarter-final draw, semi-final draw and home team for the final. The tournament had to be shortened after the Covid-19 pandemic caused most of Europe to be shut down in March, with almost all sporting activities cancelled or postponed. Many of the hardest-hit Covid-19 countries such as United Kingdom, Italy and Spain have eased their respective lockdown measures as the number of new infections and deaths subside and borders start to reopen. The quarter-finals, semi-finals and final will be played as a straight, single-match knockout tournament in Lisbon, Portugal in August. Games will be split between Benfica’s Estádio do Sport Lisboa e Benfica, which will host the final on August 23, and Sporting CP’s Estádio José Alvalade. The remaining round of 16 games will be played from August 7-8 while the quarter-finals are scheduled for August 12-15. The semi-finals will take place from August 18-19.
