Eight-time Chinese Super League champions Guangzhou Evergrande kept up their strong form in the delayed 2020 season with a win over Shandong Luneng in Dalian on Sunday night.
The 2-1 victory took Fabio Cannavaro’s side to 28 points from 11 games and kept them top of group A.
Paulinho put the champions on the road to a ninth victory of the season with a strike from outside the box in the 41st minute that went in off the post. That was his eighth of the season and a 43rd goal in 72 games since returning from Barcelona.
Chinese international striker Elkeson then doubled the lead with a free kick from distance on 70 minutes that left Wang Dalei in the Shandong Luneng goal with no chance.


The Shandong side pulled a goal back through Wu Xinghan with four minutes left on normal time but an equaliser proved too far.
Shandong’s Lin Dai and Guangzhou’s Aloisio were handed their marching orders deep into time added on.


Shandong Luneng’s former Manchester United midfielder Marouane Fellaini was taken off injured, replaced by the newly reinstated Roger Guedes after 19 minutes.
The win puts Cannavaro’s champions nine points clear of second place Jiangsu Suning in group A, with the top four teams moving on to play the championship round in the season’s impending second stage.
In Sunday’s other game, Jiangsu Suning drew 3-3 with Guangzhou R&F to keep their grip on that second spot.

Paulinho has now scored 8 goals in 11 games for Guangzhou after the COVID break since July topping the Chinese Super League Goalscoring Charts.

A freescoring game began with Israeli forward Dia Saba opening the scoring for Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s side after just five minutes but then Jiangsu turned the tables.
Ivan Santini kept up his recent form to draw the scores level after 27 minutes before Alex Teixeira put them ahead three minutes after the restart. Former Italy international Eder added a third for Cosmin Olaroiu’s side on 55 minutes.
What seemed like another win for the Nanjing-based side was put in doubt with Ji Xiang’s 89th-minute own goal before Chang Feiya snatched a share of the spoils in stoppage time.
