The Hong Kong Premier League title race is now in Eastern’s hands after a late Southern goal saw leaders Kitchee held to a 1-1 draw at Hong Kong Stadium.
Kitchee dominated the first half, creating a number of chances for strikers Nikola Komazec and Manu Gavilan but it was not until the 74th minute when they took the lead through Gavilan who fired in off the post from a Komazec cross.
Within 10 minutes, Southern were level through Kota Kawase, who shocked the leaders by nodding in a Zesh Rehman cross, the player-manager justifying his selection.
They kept knocking at the door but Kitchee could not find a second goal, with players from both sides falling to the turf after the final whistle.
The result leaves Kitchee two points clear of Eastern but the second placed side have a game in hand. They face Happy Valley on Tuesday..
