Tottenham’s Son Heung-min thanks Jose Mourinho after Spurs sacking

  • ‘I have no words to describe how I’m feeling, it’s been a pleasure to work with you,’ South Korean superstar shares online
  • Portuguese boss was sacked by club on Monday after 17 months in charge, only ‘Sonaldo’ and Harry Kane thank departing manager
Tottenham Hotspur’s star forward Son Heung-min has been one of the few players to come out in support of sacked manager Jose Mourinho.

“I have no words to describe how I’m feeling, it’s been a pleasure to work with you, I’m sorry things didn’t work out and truly grateful for the time we’ve had together,” Son wrote on Instagram with a photo of him and his former boss.

“Good luck and all the best for the future.”

Mourinho was sacked on Monday after 17 months at the English Premier League outfit, which coincided with Son’s best form since signing for Spurs.

The Portuguese was complimentary towards the South Korean star, calling him “Sonaldo” in reference to Brazil’s Ronaldo after a goal against Burnley in December 2019 that went on to win Fifa’s Puskas Award for best goal.

Mourinho also leapt to Son’s defence after the team’s recent English Premier League loss to Manchester United, when the forward came in for criticism for his part in a disallowed goal.

Son was the subject of a bizarre war of words between Mourinho and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. The footballer was also the victim of vile racist abuse online.

Spurs skipper Harry Kane was another player to thank Mourinho, with him and Son combining to great effect under the coach.

“Thank you for everything Boss,” Kane wrote on Twitter. “A pleasure to have worked together. I wish you all the best for your next chapter.”

Midfielder Pierre-Emile Holberg thanked Mourinho on Instagram too: “Thank you Mister, it was a great honor. I wish you all the best.”

Mourinho leaves Spurs with six games left of the English Premier League season and the team in seventh, five points off the Uefa Champions League places.

Spurs face Manchester City in the Carabao Cup final on Sunday for the chance of a first trophy since 2008.
