South Korea’s star footballer Son Heung-min will soon get his hands on a medal, as the country’s mint announced on Tuesday that it will launch a limited edition commemorative to honour his career.
The English Premier League stand-out has yet to win a major trophy with Tottenham Hotspur, most recently tasting defeat in the final of the Carabao Cup in April, though he has earned a host of individual honours and 2018 Asian Games gold.
The Korea Minting, Security Printing & ID Card Operating Corporation (KOMSCO) – the state-run printing agency – said that the commemorative items would go on sale next month.
There will be two designs, one coin and the other paper, to mark the career of the 28-year-old Tottenham Hotspur forward.

Details of the release date of the collectibles will be announced in due course, they said.
Son has superstar status in South Korea, but he will not be winning any medals of his own, at least in the military, after earning a reprieve from national service by winning gold at the Asian Games in 2018.

The former Hamburg and Bayer Leverkusen player did earn an award for his sharpshooting during his mandatory basic training, though.
That is one of a number of honours bestowed upon the footballer, including a Twitter emoji ahead of Spurs launching their official Korean-language account.
His performances for Spurs – for whom he hit a career best 17 English Premier League goals this season – have been a source of great national pride back home.

“Son Heung-min’s performance [in the English Premier League] has given pride and confidence to South Koreans going through difficult times amid the new coronavirus pandemic,” KOMSCO CEO Bahn Jahng-shick said, as reported by Yonhap.
Bahn added that Son was being honoured for enhancing the prestige of South Korea globally.
Last December, the South Korean government stated that Son’s impact on the economy was worth some 2 trillion won (US$1.8 billion), as reported by Yonhap.

“As a result of analysing the economic ripple effect of the Korea Academy of Sports Policy and Science and Son Heung-min, the scale was estimated to reach 1.98885 trillion won,” the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism said.
Aside from retail, exports and production, Yonhap reported on “the intangible value that Son Heung-min induces in Korea, such as inspiring emotion and self-esteem, and motivating youth” which was valued at US$658 million, while advertising was valued at US$16.2 million.
They noted that his financial impact was only likely to increase.

Son also was praised by minister Park Yang-woo for winning the Puskas Award and cheering his compatriots as the country battles the Covid-19 pandemic.
Youth footballers are set to benefit from the medal sales.
“Portions of the proceeds from the sales will go toward developing the Korean youth football community according to Son’s wishes, according to KOMSCO,” South Korean news agency Yonhap reported.

Son, the top scoring South Korean in European football, became the first Asian player to be named to the Professional Footballers’ Association English Premier League Team of the Year last week, which is voted for by his fellow professionals.
The forward, who is on Fifa World Cup Qatar 2022 qualifier duty with the men’s senior national team, may yet win a medal this summer if he joins the South Korea under-23s at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.
