Former Spurs boss Jose Mourinho says that England need their own Son Heung-min to get the best out of skipper Harry Kane in the Uefa European Championships this summer. Mourinho, who was sacked by Spurs in April, was speaking to TalkSport radio ahead of the start of Euro 2020 on Friday. England begin their campaign against the 2018 Fifa World Cup finalists Croatia at Wembley on Sunday. “What’s needed is what we tried at Tottenham,” the incoming Roma manager told the radio station in an interview with Alan Brazil and Ray Parlour. “He [Kane] drops so much, he gets between the lines, he’s such a quality and technical player that he can assist and link the play. If you do that, and you don’t have a player who looks for that [run behind], you find yourself having the ball but not being dangerous. “When a player is my boy, he is always my boy, even when we’re not together.” “I did yesterday [send him a message].” José Mourinho tells talkSPORT about what makes #ENG ’s Harry Kane so special. pic.twitter.com/IrYeVAxNqh — talkSPORT (@talkSPORT) June 11, 2021 “I believe they need that because he will naturally drop, you will see him coming deeper, getting the ball – great vision, great passing, change of direction 70 metres to exploit the opposite full-back. “He has all of this. We cannot say only he can score goals. Other guys have that responsibility. PFA apologises to Son Heung-min over Team of the Year snub Kane’s talents saw him top score in the English Premier League last season with 23 goals as well as notching up a league-leading 14 assists – directly assisting Son for nine league goals. The South Korean superstar had his most prolific season since arriving at Spurs in 2015, scoring 17 goals in the English Premier League. Mourinho, who also said that he had messaged Kane ahead of the tournament, then appeared to contradict himself when he picked his own England starting line-up for the Croatia game. ❌ @JPickford1 ❌ @MarcusRashford ❌ @Sterling7 ✅ @DeanHenderson ✅ @BellinghamJude José Mourinho picks his England starting XI for the first game of #EURO2020 . Son, meanwhile, is on international duty with South Korea and could return to the side for their final Fifa World Cup Qatar 2022 qualifier against Lebanon on Sunday. The 28-year-old sat out his side’s 5-0 win over Sri Lanka in midweek but will return for the top of the table clash in group H. Lebanon could leapfrog Son’s South Korea with a 17-o win in Goyang.
