Guangzhou FC remain without a single goal in their disastrous AFC Champions League campaign after going down 5-0 to South Korea’s Ulsan Hyundai in the Malaysian city of Johor Bahru on Sunday. Heading into the match, Guangzhou’s attacking midfielder Ning Haoxu said his young team had been progressing and improving, but it was hard to see where that progress had been made. Similar to their 3-0 win against Guangzhou just three days ago, Ulsan were in cruise control from the opening stages and were rewarded in just four minutes when Yun Il-lok launched a well-placed curler into the corner of He Lipan’s goal. While the K League side had a 1-0 lead heading into half-time, the second stanza saw Ulsan outplay the Chinese team on all fronts and it’s by sheer luck they did not extend their lead even further. Over four games, Guangzhou have conceded a whopping 21 goals. In a rare attack, the side almost scored their first of the campaign after some fine work by Ning Haoxu, who shimmied his way past the Ulsan’s defence to unleash a roaring effort just wide of goalkeeper Jo Hyeon-woo. Ning was left to rue his miss when Ulsan replied immediately as Hungarian Mark Koszta drove a header past He on the 54th minute mark. Substitute Vako Qazaishvili made it three just 10 minutes later as the gap continued to widen. Jun Amano then made it four for Ulsan with a right-footed low drive after some fine work by Seol Yeong-Woo. Ulsan capped a bow on their performance with a mesmerising team move in the 85th minute, initiated by Oh In-pyo who showed eagle-eyed vision to find an unmarked Seol to convert from close range for Ulsan’s fifth and final goal of the evening. With two games remaining, the young Guangzhou squad becomes the first team eliminated from the ACL East Zone. Ulsan will look to continue their run when they face Kawasaki Frontale on Wednesday, while Guangzhou meets Southern Tigers team Johor Darul Ta’zim. In Thailand, Singapore’s Lion City Sailors placed themselves in the mix with a 3-2 win over Shandong Taishan FC in Group F on Sunday. Shandong Taishan accomplished Chinese clubs’ 1st goal in the 2022 ACL: Lu Yongtao converted a penalty to pull one back. Liu Guobao scored Shandong’s 2nd in the last minute. It was the first goal for any Chinese club in the 2022 AFC Champions League, which came via a penalty from Singapore captain Harris Harun, who brought down Lu Yongtao. The skipper made no mistake in converting the spot-kick to narrow the deficit. Shandong continued to press forward for the equaliser, only for the Sailors to capitalise with Song Ui-young sparking a successful counter-attack late in the second half to extend their lead to three goals. Their second came in the 90th minute through a moment of individual brilliance with Liu Guobao curling his effort into the top left corner. The Sailors play Urawa on Wednesday, while Shandong play Daegu.
