K-pop group STAYC honour wrong Rangers in Texas, bring back memories of Ally McCoist and Paul Gascoigne on Teenfresh tour

  • Texas Rangers have reached the baseball World Series for the first time since 2011
  • But members of the K-pop band wore retro Glasgow Rangers football shirts from 1996-97, when Ally McCoist and Paul Gascoigne were playing

K-pop band STAYC had hoped to honour baseball side Texas Rangers when they stopped in Dallas as part of their US tour, but a fashion mix-up saw several members take to the stage wearing retro Glasgow Rangers football kit.

Instead of celebrating the likes of shortstop Corey Seager and right fielder Adolis Garcia, the blue Rangers shirts from the 1996-97 season conjured up memories of Ally McCoist and Paul Gascoigne.

The six-piece girl group, who have found success in South Korea and Japan, are currently embarked on their Teenfresh world tour. Band members Sumin, Sieun, Isa, Seeun, Yoon and J made their debut in 2020 with the release of their album Star to a Young Culture – which is the group’s acronym.

Their attire would have triggered nostalgic memories for supporters of the Scottish version of Rangers, who won their ninth consecutive league title that season, which equalled the record set in 1973–74 by their fierce rivals Celtic.

The blue half of Glasgow, managed by Walter Smith, also won the Scottish League Cup thanks to a 4-3 victory over Hearts at Celtic Park with a team who featured the likes of Gascoigne, McCoist and Brian Laudrup.

Meanwhile, Texas Rangers have reached their first World Series since 2011. They are the oldest Major League Baseball team never to have won the World Series.

One Glasgow Rangers fan wrote on X, formerly Twitter: “Rangers are the kings of K-pop.”

Another wrote: “As a Scottish person who supports [Rangers] this was not in my 2023 bingo card.”

This was not the first time a K-pop band had chosen to don a Glasgow football shirt. In 2018, two members of the boy band Stray Kids appeared wearing retro Celtic shirts in the music video for their song “My Pace”.
