The grudge between France and Argentina in men’s football spilled into the Olympics as their quarter-final descended into anarchy with a 30-man brawl which continued down the tunnel.

The hosts won the contest 1-0 with a fifth-minute goal from Crystal Palace forward Jean-Philippe Mateta.

But just moments after the final whistle, players from both sides were involved in a mass brawl as substitutes flocked onto the pitch to join in.

The incident continued down the tunnel before French players re-emerged to celebrate their victory on the pitch.

France’s recent rivalry with Argentina can be traced back to the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, which the South Americans won on penalties after an epic 3-3 draw.

During the celebrations back home, Argentina goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez was criticised for engaging in derogatory chants about France forward Kylian Mbappe, who scored a hat-trick and a penalty in the shoot-out during the final.
