Are Arsenal now an established side again in the Uefa Champions League?
Comfortably overcoming an underwhelming Paris Saint-Germain side has been the hallmark of challengers in recent seasons – and that’s exactly what Mike Arteta’s side did.
Elsewhere, Celtic showed no new format was going to make them change their ways as they continued their tradition of conceding as many goals as possible away from home on the continent.
While, away from football, there was a tasty China Open men’s final to look forward to among other things while you were sleeping.
Up and running

Arsenal got their first victory in the “new” Champions League with a 2-0 win over PSG thanks to first-half goals from Kai Havertz and Bukayo Saka.
PSG once again showed they were unable to compete with the top teams in Europe, while boss Luis Enrique’s prematch decision to omit Ousmane Dembele for disciplinary reasons backfired as the French side lacked any real goal threat.
Following the match, Arteta hailed “unbelievable” Havertz after his third goal in three matches.
“He is one of our main players at the moment,” the Spaniard said.
Meanwhile, Celtic’s Champions League goal difference is -2 despite scoring five in their opening match as they shipped seven away to Borussia Dortmund.
A Karim Adeyemi hat-trick inspired last season’s beaten finalists, whose fans displayed a banner criticising the “Uefa Mafia” ahead of kick-off.
Inter kick on

Iran forward Mehdi Taremi scored a late penalty as Inter Milan overcame Red Star Belgrade 4-0.
It means the Nerazzurri have yet to concede in the competition so far, while the visitors’ dismal away record in Europe continues.
Hakan Calhanoglu opened the scoring with a superb free kick before Marco Arnautovic and Lautaro Martinez put the hosts in control.
Barcelona, meanwhile, bounced back from a surprise opening-day defeat to Monaco with a resounding 5-0 victory against Young Boys as Robert Lewandowski scored twice.
Raphinha, Inigo Martinez and an own goal by Mohamed Ali Camara rounded off the scoring.
But AC Milan’s qualification hopes took a big hit as Victor Boniface’s goal ensured they went down 1-0 at German champions Bayer Leverkusen to make it two defeats from two.
Though, all the Rossoneri need to do to remain in contention is finish in the top 24. So maybe it’s not all doom and gloom.
Back to winning ways
Rounding off the Champions League, Manchester City equalled a United record – sort of – with a 4-0 victory over Slovan Bratislava.
That’s now 25 matches in the competition without a defeat in regulation time, matching the same run achieved by United between September 2007 and May 2009.
Of course, City were eliminated by Real Madrid on penalties at the quarter-final stage last season. But we’ll ignore that.
Surprise, surprise Erling Haaland was back among the goals, alongside Ilkay Gundogan, Phil Foden and youngster James McAtee.
Incredibly, French debutants Brest found themselves second in the giant 36-team table, behind leaders Dortmund, after they beat FC Salzburg 4-0 in Austria.
Stuttgart’s clash with Sparta Prague and PSV’s meeting Sporting CP both finished 1-1 in the night’s other matches.
Sinner v Alcaraz

Jannik Sinner ignored the bubbling controversy over his steroid case and a roaring home crowd to set up a China Open final against Carlos Alcaraz on Tuesday.
The world No 1 and defending champion defeated the 96th-ranked Chinese wild card Bu Yunchaokete 6-3, 7-6 to avoid a major upset.
The Italian faces Spanish second seed Alcaraz, who was in fine form in a 7-5, 6-3 victory over Russian third seed Daniil Medvedev in the other semi-final.
“It’s a very delicate moment, very difficult, very different,” Sinner said after racking up a 15th win in a row even as he makes headlines off the court. “So every victory for me is a great sign.”

NFL: A former financial manager for the NFL’s Jacksonville Jaguars who stole $22 million from the team is suing FanDuel for $250 million, saying the betting company preyed on his gambling addiction. Amit Patel, who is serving a 6 1/2-year prison sentence in South Carolina claimed that FanDuel ignored its own responsible gambling and anti-money-laundering protocols, knew Patel was an employee of the NFL team and therefore not eligible to gamble legally, and knew that the $20 million he wagered on years of daily fantasy sports contests was either stolen or not from a legitimate source.
Cricket: Babar Azam revealed he had stepped down from Pakistan’s white-ball captaincy only six months after being reappointed ODI and Twenty20 skipper by the Pakistan Cricket Board, while Tim Southee stood down as New Zealand captain in the wake of their heavy Test series defeat in Sri Lanka and will be replaced by Tom Latham.
Football: A victory for Manchester United? Captain Bruno Fernandes has escaped a three-match suspension after his red card in the 3-0 defeat to Tottenham was overturned following a successful appeal.
