With men’s football seemingly on all the time, it can feel quiet during international breaks as club teams have two weeks off.
But sport never sleeps, as they say, so there is still lots to keep across.
There was action in both men’s and women’s cricket while the Uefa Women’s Champions League produced a huge shock.
So here’s a look at that and everything else you missed while you were sleeping.
Root: just the start

Joe Root said there are “many more runs to get” after he surpassed Alastair Cook to become England’s greatest Test match run-maker.
Root moved past Cook’s 12,472 runs when he drove Aamer Jamal for a boundary to reach 71 on his way to a brilliant 176 not out on the third day of the first Test against Pakistan.
The 33-year-old batted through the day in the heat and fought cramp to register his 35th Test century, taking England to 492-3 and within 64 runs of Pakistan’s first innings after an unbeaten 243-run stand with Harry Brook.
“[I feel] tired, more than anything. It’s been a long day,” Root said. “I’m obviously proud, but still feel there’s plenty more left to do and many more runs to get.
“I’m sure I’ll look back at it at some point when I’m finished and be very proud of it.”
UWCL delivers

Manchester City secured a sensational 2-0 victory over Barcelona in European women’s football’s premier competition.
The Catalans have been in five of the previous six Champions League finals, winning three – including the previous two – to set up their stall as the dominant side in women’s football.
But Naomi Layzell and Bunny Shaw scored goals in each half to earn the Women’s Super League side a famous victory in their competition opener.
After a traumatic end to the previous campaign in which City had the league title in their own hands but blew it in the dramatic circumstances on the final day, they are looking to prove that they are a contender both domestically and continentally this year.
It’s likely to act as a wake up call for Barca, with both they and City expected to reach the knockout stages. The other match in Group D saw Hammarby beat St Polten 2-0.
Elsewhere, Bayern Munich crushed Arsenal 5-2 with former Chelsea forward Pernille Harder netting a hat-trick to lay down a serious marker.
After years of Wolfsburg dominance in Germany, Bayern have started to assert themselves with titles in the last two seasons and are now looking to make their mark in the Champions League.
Juventus beat Norwegian side Valerenga to heap the pressure on 2007 winners Arsenal, with one big-hitter sure to be eliminated from the “Group of Death”.
Skips and Stones
Harry Kane won’t start England’s Nations League game against Greece and John Stones will captain the side for the first time, interim manager Lee Carsley said.
Kane, who injured his right leg while playing for Bayern at the weekend, has been training separately since arriving at the England camp, and Carsley is not willing to risk his striker on Thursday, with a game against Finland to come on Sunday.
“Harry’s nursing an injury, a small knock; it’s something that we won’t take a chance with,” Carsley told reporters. “We’re not ruling him out just yet, but he won’t start the game, hopefully he’ll be in contention then for Sunday.
“Time will tell, it’s not something I think we should be rushing.”
With his captain on the bench, Carsley has chosen Stones to wear the armband.
“It was a great conversation that I was able to have with John last night, to have that responsibility to ask him to captain the team,” Carsley said.
A delighted Stones said he was lost for words when he was told the news by Carsley.
“Definitely everything that I could have dreamed of as a kid, more for my family I think, to be able to see me walk out as England captain is a special moment and one that I can’t thank Lee enough for,” Stones said. “As he said, a great conversation that we had last night and one that I was a bit speechless in.”
T20 big hitters

India and South Africa piled up the two highest totals at the Women’s T20 World Cup to stay on track for the semi-finals.
Captain Harmanpreet Kaur and opener Smriti Mandhana hit half-centuries as India defeated Sri Lanka by 82 runs.
India made a tournament high of 172-3 from their 20 overs before Sri Lanka were dismissed for 90 off the penultimate ball of the match.
Earlier, South Africa produced a superb all-round performance to thrash Scotland by 80 runs.
South Africa chalked up 166-5 in their 20 overs before the Scots, playing in their first World Cup, were bowled out for 86.
India now have two wins in three games ahead of their final Group A match with six-time champions Australia on Sunday.
The top two teams from each of the five-nation pools make the semi-finals.

LeBron James expressed displeasure with a preseason schedule that has his Los Angeles Lakers flying to the Midwest to face the Milwaukee Bucks for an exhibition NBA game this week.
After opening the preseason with two games in Palm Desert, California while their home arena undergoes a major renovation, the Lakers play at Milwaukee on Thursday before closing out the exhibition slate with games in Las Vegas, Phoenix and San Francisco.
“Can someone please explain to me why we’re getting on a plane and heading to Milwaukee for 1 pre-season game!?!?” four-time NBA champion James wrote on X before the 1,750-mile journey.
Former NBA player-turned basketball analyst Richard Jefferson replied: “Bro I’m surprised you on that plane” and James wrote back to his former teammate: “I’m surprised at myself!”, along with a man facepalming emoji.
The Bucks flew to Los Angeles last preseason for a game against the Lakers.
Los Angeles are not the only team logging miles during the 2024 preseason and some even left the United States as the past two NBA champions – Boston Celtics and Denver Nuggets – played two exhibition games in Abu Dhabi.
