Real Madrid edged a thrilling Champions League play-off first leg 3-2 against Manchester City, with Jude Bellingham scoring a last-minute winner at the Etihad.

This was the fifth meeting in the past six seasons between the two sides generally considered the best in Europe over that period.

But this season was different. Forced to compete in a play-off because they failed to finish in the Uefa Champions League top eight, it has been a complicated season for both.

City have a fight just to re-enter the competition next season while, for La Liga leaders Real Madrid, this was their first victory over a so-called elite side this campaign.

Erling Haaland opened the scoring inside 20 minutes before Kylian Mbappe equalised on the hour mark.

The home side’s No 9 then sparked a furious final 10 minutes as he reasserted his side’s lead from the spot only for former City midfielder Brahim Diaz to equalise again on 86 minutes and Bellingham to win it in stoppage time.
