Chelsea’s poor recent form continued as they were beaten 3-0 at Brighton to suffer their second defeat of the week by the Seagulls.

Kaoru Mitoma opened the scoring on 27 minutes with a superb goal before Yankuba Minteh’s double confirmed the result.

After briefly threatening a title challenge, Chelsea have now won just twice in their last nine matches, with four defeats in that run.

Their most recent reverse leaves them vulnerable to dropping out of the top four with fifth-placed Manchester City and sixth-placed Newcastle United, who meet this weekend, two points behind with a game in hand.

Brighton, meanwhile, moved up to eighth – four points off City in what is likely to be a Uefa Champions League place next season.
