Roberto Losada has pledged to ignore the uncertainty around his future and deliver a “hungrier and more dynamic” Hong Kong team when they host Mongolia on Friday.

It appeared that Losada’s coronation was imminent when the Football Association of Hong Kong, China (HKFA) last week said they would stage a press conference this Tuesday to confirm their new head coach.

However, the governing body quickly backtracked, postponing the briefing to an unconfirmed later date.

In interim charge for the past 5½ months, Losada said after overseeing training on Monday that he could provide “no updates” about his situation.

An HKFA spokeswoman said there had been no snags in the head coach appointment process, and that the announcement U-turn stemmed from a wish to finalise information over the Fifa Asean Cup that Hong Kong is poised to stage this autumn.

“The press conference was supposed to be about the Asean Cup as well as the head coach,” the spokeswoman said. “We wanted more time to make sure we have all the concrete details [about the Asean Cup], rather than just saying we are hosting it.”
