Hong Kong could be on a collision course with former head coach Jorn Andersen after the Myanmar Football Federation confirmed they would appoint the Norwegian to lead their national team “in the coming days”.

In charge of Hong Kong for 2½ years until he quit to take charge of Yunnan Yukun in May 2024, Andersen arrived in Yangon on Tuesday to thrash out the final details of his contract.

Myanmar are poised to compete in Division 2 of the inaugural Fifa Asean Cup, which will be staged in Hong Kong from September 21 to October 5.

“Jorn Andersen, who is guaranteed to take charge as the new head coach of Myanmar National Football Team, has officially arrived in Yangon today [July 7],” the Myanmar Football Federation (MFF) said in a statement.

“Once agreements are reached, he will officially sign a contract for the head coach of Myanmar in the coming days.”

Enormously popular among Hong Kong supporters, Andersen ended the city team’s 55-year wait to compete in a major tournament when they qualified for the 2023 AFC Asian Cup finals. He was also at the helm for the unlikely run to the Asian Games semi-finals three years ago.
