Dimitar Berbatov has urged “complete player” Harry Kane to return to the English Premier League, as the superstar striker gets set for a heavyweight World Cup quarter-final duel with Erling Haaland and Norway on Sunday.

Currently fourth in the Golden Boot standings on six goals, Kane is poised to enter the final year of his deal with Bayern Munich, where he has handsomely ended his infamous trophy drought following a 2023 move from Tottenham Hotspur.

In Hong Kong for the launch of next month’s Jockey Club Youth Football Academy Summit, where Manchester United under-16s will play games against Kitchee u18s and an u16 city team, Old Trafford legend Berbatov told the South China Morning Post that Kane “still has two things he needs to achieve”.

“He needs to take the Premier League scoring record from Alan Shearer [who scored 260 goals to Kane’s current tally of 213] and to become a champion in England,” Berbatov said. “Those targets would be top of the list if I was him.

“I want to see him go back to the Premier League, I was very sad when he left but he’s proved it was the right decision.”

Kane has scored six goals in North America, one fewer than Haaland and Kylian Mbappe, and two fewer than the indefatigable Lionel Messi.
