F1 Italian Grand Prix: Verstappen wins as race ends behind safety car; Zhou Guanyu back in points in Monza
- Red Bull’s Max Verstappen wins fifth race in a row and 11th of 2022 season to edge closer to title
- Charles Leclerc second in Ferrari’s home event, with Geroge Russell of Mercedes in third

Max Verstappen won the Italian Grand Prix on Sunday to leave him in touching distance of his second straight Formula One title.
Championship leader Verstappen claimed his first ever win at Monza after fighting from seventh on the grid to beat Charles Leclerc over the line on another difficult day for Ferrari.
The Red Bull driver is 116 points ahead of Leclerc, who started on pole, in the drivers’ standings after winning a race whose final six laps were run with the safety car.
China’s Zhou Guanyu had a good day for Alfa Romeo, finishing in 10th to win his sixth point of the season. Teammate Valtteri Bottas was 13th.
“We had a great race, we were quickest on every compound,” said Verstappen.
With six races left, Verstappen can win the driver’s crown at next month’s Singapore GP.
