A superb late surge from Adam Scott and a flawless round from 2010 British Open champion Louis Oosthuizen saw them share the lead on seven under after the first day’s play at the HSBC WGC Champions at Mission Hills in Dongguan on Thursday.

Four-time major-winner Phil Mickelson, Masters champion Bubba Watson, in-form Swede Peter Hanson and Ireland’s Shane Lowry were among the chasing pack, one shot back, while China’s Wu Ashun and Korea’s Kang Ik-jae were leading Asians on four under.

Aussie Scott finished birdie, birdie, eagle on his last three holes (7, 8, and 9) to join Oosthuizen at the top.

“It was a solid day that all of a sudden turned into a really good day. But I hit a lot of good shots, and they ended up finishing close on the last couple holes, and I took advantage of that.

“With five par 5s, it kind of sets up well for my game, and the plan is to just take advantage of the 5s and hopefully hang in there with the leaders all week.”

South African Oosthuizen had seven birdies for his 65 on a sunny, windless day at the Olazabal course in Dongguan that seemed tailor-made for low scoring.
