Ryder Cup 2018: what time is Tiger Woods up, where is it, what are the odds and how can I watch the action from Le Golf National?

As the age-old battle between the best US and European golfers suits up for a 42nd time, the tournament heads to France for the first time

Ryder Cup
The Ryder Cup returns this weekend for the 42nd edition of the tournament that pits the best golfers in the US against their European counterparts.

This year the action takes place in France for the first time, only the second time the tournament has ever been held outside of the US or the UK.

All eyes will be on the US team, not only because they are the holders but because they have recalled Tiger Woods and the veteran has just won his first tournament in five years.

What is the Ryder Cup?

Taking place every two years, the Ryder Cup sees teams from Europe and the US battle it out for a trophy named after English seed merchant Samuel Ryder, who donated it. The competition was initially between the US and a British representative team, with the first official tournament held in 1927. Since 1979 it has been a European team, with golfers from across the continent eligible to play the Americans.

When is it?

The Ryder Cup takes place from September 28-30 with the Sunday singles the most intense day of action. The first shot will be teed up at 2.10pm (Hong Kong time) on Friday.

Where is it?

Outside the UK or US for only the second time after the Valderama Course in Andalusia, Spain in 1997, the course is the Albatros course at Le Golf National in Guyancourt, 27 kilometres south-west of Paris. It’s thought the location will give the European team an advantage.

What is the format?

Split into three days, the first two days see teams of two play across four foursome matches (golfers play alternate shots) and four fourball matches (golfers play the better ball) per day.

The final day is devoted to 12 singles matches. Each one of these matches is worth one point for a total of 28 points, and 14.5 points is needed to win the trophy. The holders retain the trophy with 14 points.

How can I watch it?

In Hong Kong, you will need Now TV’s golf channels. The action is live on Now Golf 1, 2 and 3 (channels 682, 683 and 684) while there will also be round-up shows broadcast on the same channels.

Who are the bookmakers’ favourites to win?

The US team have lost the last five visits to Europe and last won there in 1993. They are the holders after stopping Europe’s three-cup run in 2016.

The US are the favourites with the bookmakers at $1.92 to win the Ryder Cup outright, with Europe claiming it back at $2.4. The draw is $13.

For the scores, the most popular bets are Europe by 14.5-13.5 ($13) and the US winning 14.5-13.5 ($11).
