While the Hong Kong Golf Association continues to scour the world to unearth future Hong Kong potential – such as Hong Kong Open teenage sensation Alexander Yang – it certainly does not mean there is a shortage of talent at home.
According to local player Terrence Ng Shing-fung, who was part of the record-breaking quartet who made the Open cut last weekend, the results and support show that grassroots golf development is taking bigger strides than ever.

“It shows you can still do well being based in Hong Kong,” said the 25-year-old amateur Ng, who finished at a respectable two over par in Fanling. “We have the facilities and the support, and we have a pretty good coaching system here. For the juniors, we have lots of programmes and tournament opportunities – much better than it was for me 10 years ago.”

Tuen Mun native Ng started playing golf aged eight alongside his father at the nearby Garden Farm Golf Centre in Sai Kung. What began as casual days at the driving range turned into a national youth team call-up just two years later. Ng has featured under the Hong Kong banner ever since, most notably defending his men’s close amateur title in 2016 and 2017, representing his home at the 2018 Asian Games in Jakarta, and making the cut in an Open headlined by world top 20 players Tony Finau and Shane Lowry.
